Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
This psalm was given to show that God fills heaven and earth and that no one can hide from him. Wherever a person goes, even to the farthest parts of the sea, God is present there. There his hand personally leads and guides, and his right hand holds and sustains with care.
No ascent to heaven, no descent into the deep, and no flight to the earth's farthest reaches can take anyone beyond him. No distance, no darkness, no solitude, even a place beyond human reach, removes anyone from his presence, sight, and care. In that context his all-seeing presence means he sees the whole situation and knows words, actions, and thoughts. He hears every deed, word, thought, motive, action, and transaction, so no one can hide wrongdoing from his observation and each person is held accountable.
No one can get away from his presence even by wanting to. He is the eternal, universal guardian of justice, concerned in every action toward a fellow human. He takes part against even one act of wrong done against another person, high or low, rich or poor. His own hand is spread as a shield over the rights of brother toward brother, so that to wound or bruise a brother's soul or rights is to strike against the hand of justice that holds the sword. Even there his hand finds and guides, so he is not beyond the reach of a humble seeker.
