A Man Gazes at the Stars at Nightby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 139:8

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

The verse sets out opposite extremes to show the reach of God's presence: heaven means heaven above, and hell means the grave below, the realm of the dead, the lowest depths, also described as hell and the depths. Neither heaven nor the grave lies beyond Him, and no place a person can go lies outside His presence and domain. His Spirit and presence fill heaven and earth and are everywhere present, and His power cannot be limited. That everywhere-present filling is personal and attentive, joined to intimate knowledge and care for all He has made.

No one can flee, hide from, or escape His Spirit, presence, sight, and knowledge. People are not free to choose their course independently of their Creator but must seek His will. He is constantly present even in the private bedchamber and in the deepest darkness, solitude, and midnight. There He hears every word uttered, notes every gesture and action, sees whether a person is faithful or disloyal, knows inward anger, and witnesses thoughts and deeds with motives of the heart open to inspection. Darkness gives no cover, for night and day are alike to Him, and the deepest midnight is no cover for the guilty one.

God sees and hears all that is done and said and keeps a faithful record of words, acts, and thoughts that must be met again. Every act, word, and thought is as distinctly marked as though there were only one person in the world and the attention of heaven were centered on him. A person may think himself alone, but to every deed there is an unseen witness, so no one can deceive Him or escape accountability. Human laws, though sometimes severe, are often broken without detection and punishment, but not so with the law of God. No part of conduct escapes observation and ways cannot be hidden from the Most High.

Sin is therefore to be feared, with the young especially to remember this. Wrongdoing and selfish misuse of what belongs to God cannot be hidden from Him, for He sees every transaction and every course of action. His presence means He sees every act toward another person and acts as guardian of justice, protecting each person's rights and opposing anyone who wrongs another whatever their status, so that harming a brother is an offense against the justice He upholds. Wherever a person goes, including the farthest parts of the sea, God is there to lead and hold that person. He is near to the world and to every person and not distant from humble seekers, and those who humble themselves and seek Him with all their heart will find Him and He will draw near to them.
