If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
The verse reveals an incomprehensible greatness, that though His throne is in heaven He is everywhere present by His Spirit with intimate knowledge of and personal interest in all He has made. The wings of the morning mean the swiftest flight upon morning light, yet even such flight to dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea cannot go from His Spirit or flee from His presence. No distance or journey can take or remove anyone beyond His presence and reach, for even in the farthest parts of the sea He is there, and His hand leads and holds and upholds. Even there His hand finds the one who seeks Him and guides him.
He sees and hears all that people do and say and think, and the very motives of the heart are open to Him, so that no distance, darkness, solitude, or deepest midnight hides conduct, and thinking oneself alone does not remove the unseen witness. He witnesses both fidelity and disloyalty and keeps a faithful record of words and actions that must be met, holding each person accountable, and unlike human laws that are often broken without detection and without punishment, His law cannot be broken with impunity. Every act and every word and every thought is as distinctly marked as though there were only one person in the whole world with the attention of heaven centered upon him. Cherishing this presence as a habitual impression, and letting the young ever remember it, causes fear to sin.
No one can get away from His presence even if he would, for He is present and concerned in every action toward a fellow man as the eternal, universal guardian of justice. He takes part against all who commit any act of wrong against their fellow men, high or low, rich or poor, and spreads His hand as a buckler over the rights of brother toward brother, so that no one can wound or bruise another's soul or rights without smiting against the hand of justice which holds the sword.
