Psalms 145:14

The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.

The Lord sustains all who are falling and lifts up all who are bowed down and cast down, set in praise for His mercies and unbounded goodness that calls for praise of Him. Jehovah is a personal God whose providence displays His character in this care for the weak and fallen. He is unsearchably great in His mighty acts, His abundant goodness and righteousness, and the glory, power and everlasting dominion of His kingdom. He is benevolent, just and holy, gracious, tender-hearted and pitiful, full of loving-kindness, righteousness and justice.

Together with the next verses, the upholding of the fallen teaches constant provision, for the eyes of all look to and wait upon Him. He gives them food at the right time and in due season, opening His hand to satisfy the desire of every living thing. That constant provision makes morning and evening rejoice and crowns the year with goodness. This character and care is greatly to be praised, to be spoken of, declared from one generation to another, uttered, sung, and made known to men by all His works and by His saints, so that all flesh blesses His holy name forever and ever.

The character shown is revealed in Jesus and fulfilled by Him day by day. Christ came to bring mercy, uplift the fallen, and gladden the waste places of the earth, with mercy and love as unconfined and refreshing as showers of rain on the earth. Gracious, tender-hearted and pitiful, He entered the humble homes of want and sorrow, speaking hope to the downcast and peace to the distressed, lifting up the bowed-down and comforting the sorrowful, carrying blessing wherever He went. Christ stoops from His throne to help every needy soul who asks Him in faith. He hears their cries, raises the fallen, gives hope to the hopeless, and sets their feet on sure paths.

It is Christ's joy and work to help those in need of help, seeking the lost, rescuing the perishing, lifting up the bowed down, healing the sick, and speaking sympathy and consolation to the sorrowing and distressed. His followers are to follow His example by helping the needy, helping the afflicted, and comforting the distressed. The more fully they are imbued with His Spirit the more earnestly they work for those around them, and the more they do for others the greater their love for the work and their delight in following the Master, with hearts filled with the love of God, speaking of the crucified Saviour with earnestness and convincing power.
