Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:
The One described is the Lord his God, the God of Jacob, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, who keeps truth forever. Happy are all who have that God of Jacob for help and whose hope is in Him, rather than putting trust in princes or in the son of man or in human beings, in whom there is no help. Their breath departs and their plans end that same day, while He alone is the right help and hope.
As the Creator who keeps truth forever, He executes justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry, frees prisoners, opens blind eyes, lifts the bowed down, loves the righteous, watches over strangers, sustains the fatherless and widow, turns back the way of the wicked, and reigns forever. Keeping truth forever means He is always the same, faithful and true forever, with no unfaithfulness in Him. His mercies are sure and His covenant everlasting, He stands behind the promises He makes, is ever mindful of His covenant, and His truth endures to all generations so that not one word of His good promises fails, unlike men who make promises only to break them like broken reeds.
His written promise is verity and truth, and all His promises are on condition of obedience. The believer who complies with the conditions may stay the soul upon His Word and rest calmly and securely with greater certainty than in any promise from finite beings, while departing from His plain injunctions forfeits any right to expect or claim His blessing. Trust belongs in God and not in men, for He sets the councils of men at naught when their conclusions are not pure and clean and sound before Him. His holiness and justice are the standard that keeps people from unprincipled actions, so men are to act under His supervision, accept His standard, and bring all decisions and plans to Him for approval.
Every tempted soul may depend on Him in all personal wants, review His great encouragements with grateful thank offerings, and talk faith and practice faith without dishonoring Him by unbelief or by a harsh spirit. His Word is to be believed and honored, wants are to be taken to Him in prayer as a child comes to a parent trusting the heavenly Father to give good gifts, and He is to be trusted in forever for everlasting strength. When a person can no longer be active and infirmities press upon them, all He requires is trust and committing the keeping of the soul to Him, grasping the promises and holding to them, and when memory fails listening to them from the lips of another.
