Psalms 147:3

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

He heals those who are broken in heart and binds up their wounds as part of gathering and restoring His people and restoring fallen humanity. The same boundless power and understanding by which He numbers and names the stars reaches each wounded person with tender, personal care for every sorrow and concern, lifting up the meek and humble and contrite and showing mercy to those who fear Him and hope in His mercy. He receives everyone who turns to Him sinful, helpless and dependent, and when the heart is broken before Him He surrounds the repentant with love, forgives and cleanses from sin and impurity, removes defects of character, clothes with salvation, and gives grace unto eternal life. Christ understands the tempted because He knows human weakness and suffering by experience, having been tempted and having suffered, and He heals inner wounds, gives strength, guidance and deliverance, sustains the grief-stricken and bereaved, and remains faithful when earthly hopes and friendships fail. He alone can heal the brokenhearted, so those burdened by grief, mental trouble and bodily sickness should bring their troubles to Him in prayer rather than rely on human comfort, and those who care for others should forget self, serve with tender sympathy, and guide the wounded and discouraged to Him as the all-healing Physician and Burden-bearer.

Tender Personal Restoration

The Lord heals those who are broken in heart and binds up their wounds. This healing is part of His gathering of His people and His restoring work. It is how He restores fallen humanity.

The same boundless power and understanding by which He numbers and names the stars reaches each wounded person. Though He knows and counts the stars, His care comes down to every hurt heart and tends its wounds. His care for the brokenhearted belongs together with His lifting up of the meek. It belongs with His regard for the humble and contrite, and with His pleasure and mercy toward those who fear Him and hope in His mercy.

His healing is tender. He is attentive to each person's sorrows and to every concern affecting their peace, and He takes an immediate, personal interest in them. He knows their troubles, carries burdened workers on His heart, and invites them to place their loads upon Him. Those burdened by anxieties and trials can bring their case to Him, and when they bring their troubles to Him in prayer He meets them, heals and strengthens them.

Its lessons on restoring humanity are precious and worthy of study.

Healing Received and Shared

He cares for each person who turns to him, receiving those who come sinful, helpless and dependent, and those burdened by anxieties and trials may bring their case to him for healing and strengthening. He binds up repentant sinners by surrounding them with love, forgiving them, cleansing them from sin and impurity, removing defects of character, and clothing them with salvation. When a person breaks the heart before God, God can bind it up and give grace that leads to eternal life.

Christ knows human weakness and suffering by experience, having suffered in Gethsemane and been tempted as humans are, so he understands the tempted. He heals inner wounds and gives strength, guidance, enlightenment and deliverance, sympathizing with the needy, bracing them to endure, strengthening those who need strength, and opening a way through difficulty. Divine help is nearest at the moment of greatest discouragement, and those who pass through temptation and trial gain stronger faith and richer experience.

He comforts and sustains those broken by grief and the bereaved through affliction, and will bring them through, so sufferers can rest in him and trust in his love and care. He supports the weak, steadies those who waver, comforts the discouraged, binds up the bruises of the soul, and remains faithful when earthly hopes and friendships fail. Their hope is the coming morning when they will meet their loved ones again and sorrow will end. Christ alone can heal the brokenhearted, so those burdened by grief and sorrow should turn to him rather than rely on human comfort, and should guide troubled people to him as the helper in every trial and perplexity.

A wounded, discouraged heart needs healing and tender care, since heart sickness can affect the body including the digestive organs and mental trouble can be the source of physical illness. Tender sympathy can heal such minds, and physicians should gain patients' confidence and direct them to Christ as the all-healing Physician and Burden-bearer, so that trusting his care heals mind and body. Binding up the wounds of the brokenhearted is also a pattern for people: true manhood and care for others means self-forgetful service that forgets self and sacrifices personal interests for the good of others.
