Psalms 18:6

In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

In distress a person calls upon the Lord and cries unto God, and He hears the voice, so that the cry comes before Him, even into His ears. The hearing and the answer come from His temple, for He hears the voice out of His heavenly temple.

The verse presents the Messiah, Christ Himself, amid the distress and sorrows and danger surrounding His death, calling to God and being heard. The shaking of the earth and storm imagery that follows, with signs of divine power, portrays God responding to the cry of His suffering Son.

This gives encouragement during sickness and wakeful hours, expressing the experience of seeking God and finding encouragement in His attentive care because God hears the sufferer's prayers. In the distress of sickness it means casting body, soul, and spirit upon the Lord in many wakeful hours of night prayer, longing for His blessing with the heart going out after God and trembling at His word, and finding encouragement by looking to Jesus and recounting His lovingkindnesses day and night. Even when a person is alone, God hears the cry in distress and answers, bringing relief and strength to trust Him.
