Psalms 18:9

He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.

David's words belong to his account of crying to God when in distress and being heard and brought through to deliverance. The image is of God bending the heavens down and descending with darkness under his feet, coming in judgment and power. He answers the cry for help amid the terrors of death, and as he responds the earth shakes.

What David pictured took place at Christ's death, when in his suffering he called upon God and the heavens were bowed and God came down in the midst of darkness. That coming assures every distressed one that God will bring him into a safe, broad place because he delights in him. It is realized by leaning upon God in utter dependence and receiving his help, even in sickness.
