Psalms 19:4
Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
Their line and words have gone out through all the earth to the end of the world, so that the heavens speak everywhere without speech or language yet are heard and understood in every place, and in them God has set an appointed tabernacle and course for the sun whose light spreads over all as part of that witness.
Through that worldwide voice created works make God known, revealing His glory, power, wisdom, greatness and majesty, His goodness, mercy, love and tender fatherly care, and His hand as the great Master Artist who loves the beautiful.
The book of nature and the written word come from the same source and bear the impress of the same mind, so they cannot conflict but teach in different methods and languages and shed light on each other to make God and His laws better known.
This testimony calls for joy, thanksgiving, reverence, gratitude, trust and love toward God, and for obedience to His natural and moral laws as the way to life and happiness now and hereafter.
The witness must neither be ignored in ingratitude and rebellion nor mistaken for God Himself to be worshipped, but heeded as a guide that moves God's people to warn and bless the world by word and life so others see the truth and respond.
Creation's Worldwide Voice
Their line has gone out through all the earth and their words to the end of the world, so that the testimony of the heavens and of creation reaches every place and every people throughout the earth and makes knowledge of God available everywhere. The created world continually declares the glory of its Creator, and its laws testify to the laws given to created beings. This witness stands among words of praise and adoration that call for joy in the Lord and for unceasing thanksgiving and praise for His goodness. The sun with its appointed place and course is part of this testimony, together with the other works of nature made and directed as ministers of His will.
This worldwide speech is uttered without speech or language, with day unto day and night unto night speaking, yet its voice is heard and its meaning is understood in every part of the earth through its influence upon the senses. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun in the heavens, giving it an appointed place and course whose light spreads over the landscape and turns the mind toward the Creator. The sun rising in the heavens represents Him who is the life and light of all He has made. Its witness, with the works of nature expressing His love, can teach obedience to His law.
This universal speech is nature's ten thousand voices speaking His praise, from thunder and ocean roar to forest song. Earth and sea and sky with marvelous tint and color join in it, from the everlasting hills, waving trees, delicate flowers, and living green carpeting the brown earth, to mountains, rocks and plants, caves of the sea and depths of the earth, and pearls in the ocean with amethyst and chrysolite among the rocks. Mountains, rocks, plants and the other parts of the natural world point the mind to the living Creator. Sin has marred earth's beauty, so that what is now beheld gives only a faint conception of Eden's glory.
Nature and Scripture Reveal God
Created works proclaim God's glory and make Him known throughout the earth, revealing His character, power, wisdom, greatness, majesty and presence. They tell of One infinite in power, great in goodness, mercy and love, who created the earth and filled it with life and gladness. The created world speaks of His tender, fatherly care and His desire to make His children happy, caring even for the humblest of His creatures. Nature is His handiwork and expresses His love to humanity, so that hills, valleys, rivers and seas are most fully appreciated when seen as signs of that love. It reveals the handiwork of the great Master Artist and lover of the beautiful, while the sun in the heavens represents Him who is the life and light of all He has made, and stars, sun and moon speak of Him.
The laws seen in nature testify to the laws given to created beings, and the psalm binds God's law together with His created works that proclaim His glory. Nature's teaching reveals the unity of humanity with nature and God, the universal rule of law, and the consequences of transgression. All created works act in sublime harmony with His laws, and seeing that harmony shows how unreasonable it is to oppose God's law and brings heart and mind into harmony with truth and heaven. Obedience to those natural and moral laws brings life and happiness in this world and in the world to come.
The book of nature and the written word are two books bearing the impress of the same master mind, bound together and coming from the same source. They cannot conflict but agree and speak in harmony, witnessing to the same great truths by different methods and in different languages. Each sheds light on the other, and rightly understood they teach God's wise and beneficent laws and lead to trust and praise. Together they make people better acquainted with God by teaching His character and the laws through which He works. Divine truth revealed in Scripture is reflected as from a mirror in the face of nature, so that through creation people become acquainted with the Creator, and science in discovering new wonders brings nothing that, rightly understood, conflicts with divine revelation.
Nature is God's voice and an open book and great lesson-book to be used in connection with the Scriptures to guide lost sheep back to God. Its works speak of their Maker and invite people to know Him, to look through nature to its Creator and learn of His eternal kingdom. Its ever-changing scenes and returning seasons continually display His glory, power and love and give lessons of wisdom and healing for all people. Its teachings impress the mind and shape the character, and when its works are studied the Holy Spirit flashes conviction into the mind, not the conviction that logical reasoning produces, and the sublime, spiritual truths of the written Word are impressed on the heart unless the mind has become too dark to know God, the eye too dim to see Him, and the ear too dull to hear His voice. Its testimony lifts the mind to reverence, gratitude, faith, trust and dependence on the living God, making images and shrines unnecessary as reminders of Him.
Response and Proclamation
Psalm 19 stands among words of praise and adoration that call for joy in the Lord and for unceasing thanksgiving and praise to God for His goodness. The works of creation testify throughout the world and point the mind to the Creator, and nature as an open book teaches His power, wisdom, love, and majesty to lead to reverence, gratitude, faith, trust, and dependence on Him. The sun in its appointed course across the sky spreads its light over the landscape and, with the other objects in nature, calls people to attend, learn of their Maker, and love and adore Him. Nature and the written word agree and shed light on each other, and rightly understood they teach God's wise and beneficent laws and lead to trust and praise.
Its witness teaches obedience, for all created works act in sublime harmony with God's laws while fallen people disobey their Maker. Seeing that harmony shows how unreasonable it is for man to oppose God's law, and brings heart and mind into harmony with truth and heaven by revealing the unity of humanity with nature and God, the universal rule of law, and the consequences of transgression. Those who work to gain human arts and learning should also seek God's wisdom and learn His divine laws, both natural and moral, since obedience to those laws brings life and happiness in this world and in the world to come. Youth in schools and children are to be taught from both nature and Scripture that true greatness consists in honoring God by revealing His character in daily life, so that their lives fulfill His purpose, and nature's works expressing Christ's love can teach children obedience to God's law.
The witness must not be ignored and must not replace God. The blessings of providence and the witness of creation tell of their Giver, yet people may ignore that message and remain ungrateful and rebellious. Mute created things everywhere bear the Creator's name and represent His power, greatness, majesty, and presence, and amid towering rocks and everlasting hills their witness contrasts the true God with the insignificance of false gods. The created world makes images and shrines unnecessary as reminders of God, and instead lifts people from such substitutes to worship the living God. Physical creation bears witness to God and to Jesus Christ as Creator and expresses God's character, love, power, and glory, but it is not God and must not be worshipped in place of its Creator.
The inspired words of Psalm 19 present precious promises and warnings to be accepted and believed, calling God's people to be spiritually alert, to heed Scripture as their guide, and to give the world a message of warning and mercy through both words and lives. God's works in the world proclaim His attributes throughout the earth like teachers whose message reaches everyone, acting as teachers whose testimony goes out through all the earth to the end of the world to make God known together with His word. This witness calls people to see the truth and respond to it, and when youth learn from both books to honor God in daily life their lives fulfill His purpose.
The same going out also applies to the report of God's work going out far and near. News of the city of tents reaches distant places and awakens wonderful interest. It opens doors that call for many workers in Melbourne and the surrounding towns.
