God the Father by His own decree Himself set and anointed His King upon His holy hill of Zion. That King is Christ, who was equal with God. The setting of the King is joined to the Father's declaration that Christ is His Son, showing that the Father in heaven has a voice and a person, which Christ expressed. The enthronement is God's triumph over the earthly kings, priests and rulers who refused His call, set His counsel at nought and put His Son to death, yet their guard and power were impotent against Him.
At the tomb the prince of darkness with his apostate army would have kept the sepulcher holding the Son of God forever sealed. But a heavenly host guarded it, and the God of heaven, followed by angels, walked round it to break His bonds and bring His triumph. They had been unseen witnesses of the mock trial in the judgment hall, where every action was noted and every taunt recorded. Sitting in the heavens, God laughs at the opposers and holds them in derision, speaks to them in wrath and vexes them in sore displeasure, breaks their bonds asunder and brings Christ forth victorious from the tomb, declaring Him His Son and giving Him the heathen for His inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for His possession, with power to break opposition with a rod of iron. The verse means the salvation of the human family was laid in the sacrifice of this appointed King, the exalted Saviour slain for the sins of the world who came and died so that humans should not eternally perish. The verse warns the kings and judges of the earth to be wise, to serve the Lord with fear and to submit to the Son lest they perish when His wrath is kindled.
