David Stands on Zion While Kings Gather Belowby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 2:7

I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

The verse is God Himself addressing Christ as His Son, declaring that on that day He has brought Him forth as His Son. By this decree God appoints Christ to be His begotten Son and sets Him as King upon His holy hill of Zion. The verse shows the Father in heaven to be a real personal being with His own voice, whose voice and person Christ expressed to the world. It distinguishes the Son from the angels, since God spoke this sonship declaration to the Son and to no angel, and the Son has by inheritance a more excellent name than they. Christ holds an exalted position equal with the Father, with all of God's counsels open to Him.

The declaration comes when the One who sits in the heavens laughs at opposing powers and holds them in derision, then speaks to them in wrath and troubles them in sore displeasure. By the decree the Son is given the heathen for His inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for His possession, to break rebellious nations with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Earthly kings and rulers could not overcome Christ as the Son of God, for they could not keep His tomb sealed when it was guarded by heaven. Kings and judges of the earth are therefore warned to be wise and instructed, to serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling, and to submit to the Son lest he be angry and they perish when his wrath is kindled.

The begetting is fulfilled when God raised Jesus from the dead, fulfilling the promise made to the fathers. God raised Jesus again as His Son no more to return to corruption, proving Him to be the promised Saviour of the seed of David. The verse thus carries good tidings of salvation for Jew and Gentile alike, opening repentance and forgiveness of sins and justification from all things through Jesus.
