The Nations Rage Against the Lord's Anointedby lylesouthwell

Psalms 2:9

Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

The verse promises that God's appointed Son and King will crush rebellious nations, breaking them with a rod of iron and dashing them in pieces like a potter's vessel. It warns rulers who reject God to submit to the Son before judgment comes. It was illustrated at Christ's resurrection, showing the impotence of earthly kings and rulers who could not carry out their will against Him who was slain for the sins of the world and could not defeat or restrain Him.

Though the prince of darkness and his apostate army desired to keep the tomb holding the Son of God forever sealed, a heavenly host guarded the sepulcher and the God of heaven with angels walked around the tomb. They had been unseen witnesses of all that took place in the mock trial in the judgment hall, where every action was noted and every taunt recorded. The verse will be fulfilled when Michael stands up, after Christ has finished His work of atonement and comes forth in kingly robes and crown to manifest His kingly power. That manifestation brings destruction on the wicked and trouble on the nations by the seven last plagues.

In that time of judgment the true Israel of God will be delivered and safely protected, with God's promise to charge His angels to keep them. By contrast, the image of rule with a rod of iron also describes Satan's harsh control over people who yield to him, join him in deceiving others, and set aside and make void God's law. He deceives the human family as a mass into believing God's law is no longer obligatory upon them, and multiplies his efficiency through human agencies that tempt, allure, and deceive others into vicious practices and ignoring God's law.

The sure result of that yielding is diseased bodies from violation of moral law and love grown cold because iniquity abounds.
