Psalms 21:2

Thou hast given him his heart’s desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah.

Psalms 21-25 form the March 21 reading, standing within Psalms 18-41 that close the first book of the Psalms. The verse is built as Hebrew poetic parallelism in which the second line restates the first in different words to declare that God grants the king his heart's desire and withholds nothing he asks with his lips. Such poems were performed in worship by two groups reciting or singing alternating lines with instrumental music.

The verse is fulfilled in Christ, for the Father granted his desire for life and did not withhold his spoken request. His agonized prayer was heard because of his godly fear, and the answer came in his resurrection, after which death no longer has dominion over him. It remains among the wonderful songs of human experience to be brought by faith into personal experience for meeting daily tasks and trials.
