Psalms 21:4

He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.

Psalm 21:4 stands within Psalms 18-41, which close the first book of the Psalms. Life and everlasting continuance are gifts granted by God, not qualities humans possess by nature. Those who preserve the life God gives and thank its giver receive enduring life, while those who reject the gift and fail to acknowledge its giver forfeit continued existence.

The asking for life and the giving of length of days for ever and ever was fulfilled when the Father heard Christ's prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears in Gethsemane in the days of His mortal life. He prayed to Him that was able to save Him from death and was heard for His godly fear, and the Father raised Him from the dead to die no more, so that death has no more dominion over Him. As one of the wonderful songs of human experience, the verse is to be brought by faith into personal experience for courage and help in daily tasks and trials.
