Lamb Grazing and Drinking by Still Waterby KalebRosendahl

Psalms 23:2

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He makes His people rest in green pastures and leads them beside quiet, still waters as a shepherd, showing tender care, blessing, security and provision for their need. Jesus is that good and watchful Shepherd who stays with His followers, defends them from danger, seeks the lost and carries them back, and leads them to green pastures and living waters to refresh and sustain them. Those green pastures and living waters are the spiritual nourishment of the truths of His Word, which faithful pastors, ministers and parents are to set before the flock to bring them near to Him. This leading gives assurance that even in suffering, darkness and adversity God has not forgotten His children, yet entering it calls for willingness to be led, with Jesus abiding in the heart by faith and clothed in His righteousness. In heaven the care is fulfilled when the Great Shepherd leads His redeemed to green pastures and streams of living water, where they find rest and He continues to guide them and open the mysteries of God's kingdom.

Shepherd Imagery and Setting

The verse presents the Lord as a shepherd who makes His people rest in green pastures and guides them beside quiet, still, refreshing waters. That shepherd care expresses tender provision for need, blessing, peace, security, and sustenance for those who trust Him and for His worker in His service. Its spirit calls for gentle, reassuring care toward others rather than a harsh or condemning manner. Its imagery grows out of David's life as a shepherd lad and gives voice to his communion with God and with heaven through song.

The cool, still waters set among green pastures, where the heavenly Shepherd leads His flock, portray the grace of Christ. Those same green pastures were the setting where Moses, while tending flocks through mountain wilds and valley pastures, was schooled by God through nature. There he learned humility, meekness, faith and trust, a humble way of life, and a simple unwavering faith with constant trust that palace education could not impart, drawing him nearer to God.

The green pastures and still waters also portray the heavenly Canaan awaiting God's pilgrims as their possession. Its pastures are sweet fields arrayed in living green and its waters are rivers of delight. Beheld by faith from Jordan's banks, that scene appears transporting and rapturous.

Spiritual Nourishment and Guidance

Psalm 23:2 portrays Jesus as the good and watchful Shepherd who remains with His followers to guard them from danger. He seeks out the lost sheep and carries them back to the fold. He leads His people to green pastures and to living waters and living streams where He refreshes and sustains them. Christ exercises constant watch-care over His lambs, and to be led by Him is to be a lamb in His fold kept by Him unto salvation. Parents may therefore entrust their children to His care and pray earnestly for them when separated from them, trusting the Lord to be with them and watch over them.

The green pastures and living waters portray the spiritual nourishment given to the flock through God's word. This was the nourishment the Waldensian pastors supplied as shepherds leading and feeding God's people. It is likewise the nourishment pastors give whenever they lead God's people to the truths of His Word. The truth ministers present is to be green pastures that impart spiritual nourishment and bring hearers near the living water, not barren teaching that leaves them no nearer to it.

A parent who has first been led by God may act as a faithful shepherd by guiding her children into the green pastures of Scripture and to its living waters. This is done by repeating its truths until the children take them to heart and let them govern their lives. God leads all who seek truth from His Word into such spiritual nourishment and guidance, pictured as green pastures. The Good Shepherd's leading of those who accept Him into green pastures describes Christ's work of restoring people and guiding them toward salvation.

Trust, Following, and Fulfillment

The verse assures that the Shepherd provides rest and leads to peaceful, refreshing waters, so that even in suffering, affliction and adversity His faithful children can trust that He has not forgotten them and can confidently rely on His care. It means trusting in the name of the Lord and staying upon God when walking in darkness and having no light. It means looking to Jesus as the author and finisher of faith with settled assurance of His help, so that His people will not be confounded or ashamed. To the open heart He gives cheer and rest through the bright rays of the Sun of Righteousness, leading beside still waters into peace.

Following as pictured does not mean life will always be easy or free from want, disappointment and difficulty, for believers may also be led through hard places where faith is tested. Being led beside still waters and into the green pastures of His matchless love requires willingness to be led, having Jesus abiding in the heart by faith, and being clothed with Christ's righteousness. Those who refuse to be led cannot be brought there, and they suffer loss to their own souls by leaving Jesus out of their preaching, quenching faith, and failing to reveal what Christ is to those who believe in Him. Those who enter find a matchless love that is the golden chain binding hearts in tender sympathy with humanity and in complete unity of prayers and hopes with every believing soul, recognizing the Spirit of Jesus in brethren, with power from an ever-abiding Saviour sufficient for greater emergencies.

The verse gives God's worker peace, security and rest as he trusts and is led and sustained in what is needed. Its spirit calls in work for God for gentle, reassuring care rather than a harsh or condemning manner. The pasture image describes the broad meadows of the Lord's care, reached by the path of self-denial and self-sacrifice that leads through the strait gate.

In heaven this care is fulfilled as the Great Shepherd leads His people and the redeemed to green pastures and living water and streams of living water, where they find rest. There the saints continually see new and delightful scenes. Christ the great Teacher leading beside living waters pictures His personal guidance in heaven, where the education begun on earth will continue and He will open the mysteries of God's kingdom.
