Psalms 23:6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Surely goodness and mercy pursue the believer through every day of life, and the end of that path is a forever home with the Lord. Even in suffering, affliction, darkness and danger God has not forgotten, but is present to comfort and help. This promise is reason to trust what God has said when feelings are gloomy and to lean on Him for help when the way is dark. Those who believe in the Lord and receive Jesus as a personal Saviour may claim this assurance as children of God and of the heavenly King, looking back on a life followed by goodness and mercy and looking forward to dwelling with Him. Remembering such unfailing care, merciful deliverance, lovingkindness and power calls for praise instead of complaint, and for a thankful recognition of His following care that draws the heart nearer to Him.

Lifelong Goodness and Eternal Home

Surely goodness and mercy pursue the believer through every day of earthly life, and the end of that following is a permanent home in the house of the Lord forever. That unfailing companionship is faithful love that never leaves God's people, and remembering it turns complaint into praise. The home promised is dwelling with God Himself forever, claimed by those who trust Him.

Even in suffering and affliction God has not forgotten the faithful, but remains present to comfort and help. In darkness and danger He is near to give comfort, so the promise holds when the path is dark. For that reason gloomy feelings are no measure of His promises, which are to be trusted regardless of feeling, and when walking in darkness the believer is to rely on Him for help.

This assurance belongs to the larger picture of the Lord's care and guidance as the faithful, tender Shepherd who keeps His flock. His continual care attends people at every step and is visible in His gifts. Those gifts include rain, fruitful seasons, and provisions that bring gladness to life.

Believing, Praising, and Giving

Those who believe in the Lord and accept Jesus as personal Saviour may claim the assurance that goodness and mercy attend them through life and that they will dwell in the Lord's house forever, as children of God and of the heavenly King. Coming to Jesus humbly and contritely, they can look back on life as followed by God's goodness and mercy and look forward to dwelling in the Lord's house forever. The Lord brings such believers into connection with the excellent of the earth.

When understanding is quickened as God shapes a person, that following care throughout life can be recognized with thanksgiving. Trials lead people to depend on God and draw near to Him. In that nearness they receive the divine qualities that prepare them for heaven.

God's goodness and mercy faithfully accompany His people throughout their lives, and they have the hope of dwelling with Him forever. Remembering this unfailing care and faithful love leads believers to praise rather than complain. Remembering God's merciful deliverance does the same. Remembering His mercy, lovingkindness, power, and deliverance leads to praise rather than complaint, for He is the faithful, tender Shepherd who keeps His flock.

The spirit of the Lord's care and guidance is to shape the way God's truth is shared. That continual care attends people at every step and is seen in His gifts, including rain, fruitful seasons, and the provisions that bring gladness. Because God continues to give, His people should continue giving. They should not become impatient about giving while they still receive His blessings.
