The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
The earth with all its abundance, the world and every person living in it belong to the Lord as Creator, original owner and ruler of all. His ownership embraces every tangible good of houses, lands, money, gold, cattle and crops, and every human endowment of life, strength, time, intellect and power to gain wealth. All that people hold is therefore held not as owners but as stewards, trustees and agents under His control, accountable to use everything for His glory, His service and the salvation of others. From His fulness as owner He supplies food, sun, rain and every necessity from His earthly storehouse, and He can increase or diminish what is held according to His will. Because all is His, tithes, offerings and first fruits are to be returned to Him first and cheerfully as tokens of loyalty and dependence, and His ownership is ground for living faith to move forward in carrying truth to every territory that is His.
Scope of Divine Ownership
The earth, its fulness and abundance, the world, and all who dwell in it belong to the Lord. He is owner and ruler of the earth and of the whole universe as Creator and original owner. His ownership embraces the world as His storehouse providing food, sunlight and rain for all, and all that people hold they draw from His gifts as stewards to return gifts and offerings to Him. He calls all to stand under the rule of Christ, and those working on the side of Satan in anarchy, war and strife incur fearful loss to be seen at the last great day in souls lost through failure to stand under His rule. He works upon the earth to cause production while people must cooperate by preparing soil and sowing seed, for sunshine, rain, dew and clouds come from Him and without them seed would not grow.
His fulness includes tangible treasures and goods of every kind. Cattle and animals are His, and gold and silver are His. Money, houses and lands are His, with fields, flocks and herds, and all wealth, property and resources people hold, including an abundance placed in human hands by which the hungry may be supplied with food, the naked with clothing and the homeless with homes. Because all is His, He moves upon worldly men, even idolaters, Gentiles and men in high places, to give of their abundance for His work, and what they give when approached wisely with evidence set in proper light and gracious invitation is to be received as a privilege without sacrificing principle. Therefore His servants can trust Him to provide what is needed for His work and move forward in faith despite apparent impossibilities, using what is entrusted to advance His cause and glorify His name.
People themselves belong to Him. Their breath, strength, life and bodies are His, with their time, talents, intellect, skill and power to gain wealth, for ability itself comes from Him and people can only gather what He has made. Human beings are His in a special sense through Christ taking human nature to become their Elder Brother and Redeemer, and believers are to glorify God rather than themselves. All live in the world He created as His tenants, with no exclusive right to possessions or abilities, holding them as entrusted gifts to be used in His service and for the salvation of others. Wealth and property give no ground for pride or greater standing with Him and cannot make a person more acceptable to God or pay for sin, for He deserves the glory.
Living and nonliving nature obeys His will. Human beings alone are made in His image able to partake of the divine nature, cooperate with their Creator and carry out His plans, yet they alone are found opposing His purposes. The wicked are permitted to remain in His world only until their iniquity is complete. The world was promised to Abraham and his descendants, and God's people will soon take possession of it. Particular countries are His also, so that Australia is the Lord's country and province and its people are His, and whatever people have is a loan entrusted by God to be used in His service with stewardship responsibility for how it is used.
Divine Provision and Rule
The earth is the Lord's storehouse, furnishing food with sunlight and rain for all alike, both good and evil. He causes the earth to produce, sending sunshine and rain and dew and clouds for seedtime and harvest, yet people must cooperate by preparing the soil and sowing the seed, for without what He sends the seed would not grow. Fields and flocks and herds are His because He created them and sustains their increase, and those who hold them hold them only as stewards who draw from His gifts and return gifts and offerings to Him, with beneficence shown to Him first in every matter.
As owner He is ruler of the earth and of all who dwell in it, and He calls all to take their stand under the rule of Christ. Those who work on the side of Satan in anarchy and war and strife do not know what fearful loss they are incurring, and at the last great day they will see how many souls were lost through their failure to stand under His rule. He made the world as a home for the human family where every person lives as His tenant, and that ownership gives weight against exalting human laws while His law is trampled.
He owns the world and commands the resources of heaven, so He can increase or diminish possessions and supply what is needful for those who serve and obey Him. From His abundant fulness He can supply all necessities, and all temporal and spiritual blessings come from Him. All are equally dependent on Him for breath and food and every moment of grace, for strength to preserve integrity and for physical and spiritual life, and no one has a greater claim than another on His mercy. A dearth of means for His work may be His providence testing the faith of the workers, and in answer to prayer He will help right early, bring them forth purified as gold tried in the fire, sweep away unjust suspicions cast on those striving to do His will, and will not send the needy away empty.
The simple methods of treatment for disease are His remedies because the earth and all who live in it are His. When His people have His Spirit in hearts and homes, humble themselves, cleanse the soul-temple from all defilement, pray in behalf of the sick, and in faith do all they can to combat disease by using what He has provided, He hears prayer and blesses the use of His remedies so that human effort becomes effectual. The health-food work likewise is His property and His gift to His people, not a means for personal financial gain, and its profits are to benefit suffering people everywhere. The gifts He has given and the glories and provisions of the natural world are not objects of worship and are not to draw thoughts and love away from Him, but to remind of Him and bind to gratitude and love for Him.
Human Stewardship Defined
All that human beings hold is held not as owners but as stewards, trustees, and agents employed to manage the Master's property under His control, for the earth with everything in it and all its inhabitants belongs to the Lord. This obligation of stewardship rests on every person in every part of life, whether recognized or not, since as Creator He is the original owner. What is placed in human hands — money, houses, and lands — is His own goods to trade with, and every Christian is His steward, identified with the Master, accepting a steward's responsibilities and acting in the Master's stead by making the Master's interests his own. People therefore have no exclusive right to their possessions or abilities, for they can only gather what He has made.
What is entrusted covers time, strength, intellect, talents, abilities, skill, power to gain wealth, means, money, houses, and lands, with the cattle, gold, and silver His and ability itself coming from Him. Every person along with time and talents belongs to God, and body, soul, and spirit are to be dedicated to His service by doing His will rather than letting personal pleasure govern choices. God gives life, skill, and power to gain wealth, and wealth and property with the ability to gain them are bestowed by Him to whom the glory is due.
Stewardship requires seeking Him for wisdom and willingly using all that is entrusted to honor and glorify Him, in His service and for the salvation of others. What is entrusted is to be used to advance His work and build up His kingdom in the world, including sustaining His institutions and printing and proclaiming truth, and using money to advance His work and help the needy is an investment that can bring further means as lives are converted to place themselves and their property at His service. The position is one of dignity because it rests on the Master's trust, and faithful use brings increased ability, wisdom, and understanding.
Unfaithful stewardship is to treat entrusted gifts as one's own, turning advantages gained by trading to selfish advantage or ignoring His claims, which perverts the trust and robs God in jots and tittles. It includes using His goods for selfish indulgence and gratification, self-exaltation, and oppression, satisfying selfish desires with what is God's property and squandering on selfish indulgence what was given to advance His work. It includes exalting self over the poor or despising the poor, appropriating or withholding what belongs to other parts of His work, and unfair dealing, covetousness, and dishonest schemes.
Stewards are strictly accountable and all will be called to give an account of their stewardship, for means are lent for a short time to be used for His glory. Those given more owe greater returns, and how means, time, and talents are used reveals reverence for God and whether they love God and neighbor, affecting eternal destiny. Every action great or small is seen, and waste brings judgment, with every wasted dollar that robs the churches of means to work for the salvation of souls to be accounted for. Setting aside only part for religious or charitable purposes does not make the rest one's own, for every penny and every dollar handled is His property and the use of every penny shows love to God and neighbor.
Wealth and property give no worth, standing, or greater acceptability before God, are no ground for human pride, and cannot pay for sin. The riches of the world are not a measure of a person's worth, and money is entrusted to test how it is used, including whether there is care for the poor and suffering and help to meet needs and advance Christ's cause. What gives standing before God is character formed after the divine similitude, with value in a clear, free, washed, cleansed soul, preserved moment by moment by Him who keeps vitality in the body and the heart in motion and therefore to be repaid by doing good, repenting, and being converted.
Stewardship is personal and skillful, to be managed and used by each one for the needs of God's work and to help the poor, including through freewill offerings, rather than surrendering responsibility to another so as to prevent doing the work required. It upholds His supremacy as owner by rejecting unfair dealing, selfishness, and covetousness and using talents for the spiritual purposes for which they were given. This truth that the earth and everything in it belong to the Lord is to be made plain, with necessary means used to teach it.
Giving and Faithful Use
The earth and all its fulness belong to the Lord, including its treasures and all people, animals and riches, so that human prosperity is a gift of His generosity and all wealth remains His goods entrusted to stewards and not given for self-exaltation or oppression. Tithes, offerings, first fruits and tribute are to be consecrated to Him as tokens of loyalty, submission, gratitude and sovereignty, acknowledging His ownership and human dependence and the right He has to require service and gifts because all good in this life belongs to Him. He is not enriched by gifts and receives them not because He needs them, but as grateful obedience that acknowledges that people themselves belong to Christ who bought them with His blood and that time, talents and possessions are to be devoted to Him. A gift has value only when it expresses love and devotion, and giving provides opportunity to practice self-denial, love and sympathy for others, so that without pure love even an expensive offering is unacceptable. Tithes and offerings should be given cheerfully, with the first and best offered in gratitude for His continual gifts, and the use of time and talents well shows that all we have and are belongs to Him.
He must be first in every matter and beneficence must first be shown to Him, since He is the true proprietor of fields, flocks, herds and everything possessed as Creator who sends sunshine and rain for seedtime and harvest. What He asks to be returned is already His, and because all possessions are His goods the amount owed to Him as Lord cannot be told. Those who bring tithes and offerings in loyalty and submission to His sovereignty will have His blessing increase their substance so they have abundance, while they may retain their portion.
Means possessed belong to the Lord and are lent for a short time to be used for His glory, so spending money on His work is not loss and reverence for God is revealed by how what is entrusted is used. Money entrusted by God used to advance His work, sustain institutions carrying it forward, and help the needy is an investment that can bring further means as lives are converted and place themselves and their property at His service. This includes means believers can give to support printing and proclaiming the truth, including rebuilding Pacific Press.
Those who hold property as His agents are to give His claims first consideration when making a will. They are to provide for a needy wife and children, but are not to leave property to a long line of relatives who are not needy merely because it is customary.
Every penny and every dollar handled is His property and all money is the Lord's in human hands, so nothing is to be spent foolishly or wastefully. Funds must be handled with a self-denying part, careful saving even of a penny, strictest economy and care from the highest motives and with foresight, in little things as well as large, not to please fancy but in view of limited means lest waste limit the supply. Expenditures are to be left with God Himself by asking Him how money shall be used, choosing what is most serviceable and enduring rather than cheapest, and using what is had in every way possible to bring truth before people and educate the needy throughout the whole world, with Christ strengthening every effort made in the right direction and letting blessing rest upon it.
Because He has placed abundance in human hands by which the hungry may be supplied with food, the naked with clothing and the homeless with homes, He moves upon worldly men, even Gentiles, idolaters and men in high places, to give of their abundance for the support of His work. Receiving what they give for His work is therefore proper and is to be received as a privilege without sacrificing one principle of truth. If approached wisely and given opportunity to do what is their privilege to do, with evidence set before them in a proper light and a gracious invitation, they may do much to advance His cause.
