Honest Farmer Climbs Zion with Firstfruitsby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 24:3

Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?

The verse asks who is fit to ascend into the hill of the Lord and to enter, remain and stand in His holy place and presence. The answer given is the one with clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift the soul to vanity nor swear deceitfully, but walks uprightly, does what is right, keeps truth in the heart and seeks God's face. That fitness requires inward and outward purity, with humble contrition, chastity of mind and conduct, and words and life guarded from guile, defilement and reproach against a neighbor. Through faith the soul is made clean and white in Christ's blood and clothed in His righteousness, for beholding Jesus changes the heart from selfishness to Christlike love and holiness. Only those thus cleansed will abide the day of His coming and stand through the time of trouble and in the judgment, and only those sanctified in heart and life may take up sacred work and give the last solemn warning.

Question and Immediate Answer

The question is who is fit to ascend into the hill of the Lord and to approach, enter, remain, and stand in His holy place and presence. The answer given in the verses that follow is that the one who may ascend and stand is he that has clean hands and a pure heart. That fitness means not lifting up the soul to vanity and not swearing deceitfully, but seeking God's face. It is shown in walking uprightly and working righteousness, in doing what is right and keeping truth in the heart, free from professional falseness and hollow hypocrisy.

Such a person shall receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of salvation. That includes salvation itself for those who take God as the one who guides their counsel. It includes the white robe, the crown of righteousness, and everlasting life. This is plain instruction of duty for all who desire the blessings Christ promised to the meek who shall inherit the earth, to those who hunger and thirst after righteousness who shall be filled, to the merciful who shall obtain mercy, and to the pure in heart who shall see God, calling them to stand in their appointed lot in harmony as brethren, hold aloft the Bible standard, live the truth, exercise mercy and the love of God, and be ready for service.

By the explanation in Psalm 15:4, the fit person keeps an oath even when doing so brings personal loss, and does not change it. Therefore a pledge that does not require a wrongful act must be treated as sacred, regardless of gain, revenge, or self-interest. The psalm reveals the greatness of God and His rule in Christ, calling for taking a stand under the rule of Christ rather than working on the side of Satan. Those who give themselves to anarchy and war and strife incur a fearful loss, and at the last great day they will see how many souls were lost by their failure to stand under Christ.

Pure Heart and Life

Only the pure, lowly, humble, and contrite can dwell with God and in His presence, and God dwells with them. Fitness to ascend and to stand is having clean hands and a pure heart, not giving the soul to vanity or to deceit. That purity excludes lustful corruption, for only those whose lives are morally clean can dwell with God, and departure from integrity through lustful passion shows the danger of losing the purity required to stand in His holy place. Readiness for His appearing requires purity of mind and chastity of conduct, rejecting every invitation to sin and refusing every improper familiarity and unwarrantable liberty with the person. Such a one recoils with horror from sin and from hypocrisy and villainy when one handling sacred things hides baseness of heart under a ministerial cloak.

Clean hands and a pure heart include purity of thought and an untainted soul, with body, soul, and spirit presented as a clean offering for God to accept, and those who carry the warning message near the judgment need this inward and outward purity with a living connection with God. Standing on the hill of the Lord and in His holy place is incompatible with guile, defiling words, an unsanctified heart, or taking up a reproach against a neighbor. Therefore words and conduct must be guarded, a sanctified heart sought, and the tongue and life made clean by following Christ. The one who may dwell with God walks uprightly, works righteousness, does what is right, and speaks and keeps truth inwardly and in the heart, free from devotion to vanity and deceitful speech, from professional falseness and hollow hypocrisy. The pure in heart will see God, and those without fault before His throne refuse to conceal conviction of duty for fear of persecution, maintain principle at all hazard, follow Jesus, and if they suffer for truth share His suffering and will share His glory, blessing, and righteousness from the God of salvation.

Fitness for heaven requires clean hands and a pure heart in a life marked by purity and holiness and by distinguishing the sacred from the common. One who does not love purity and holiness, or who does not live by the light God has given, is not fit to inhabit heaven, which calls for a life set apart from what is unclean and devoted to God. Those recognized as worthy of God's protection are those with clean hands and a pure heart who overcome sin through repentance and confession and do not cherish or practice sin. Clean hands and a pure heart are the reward of guarding faith and religious principles from error and corruption.

Cleansing Through Christ

The gates of the city of God open only to those who come to the Lord in humility of mind like a little child, seeking Him with all the heart and confessing sin, for He reads beneath the surface and all human sagacity, prudence, foresight, pride, energy, self-importance and power to shape things are nothingness before Him and cannot recommend anyone to Him. Those gates open only for the pure in heart, the merciful, the kind, and men and women of holy principles, while those who build themselves up in pride and self-sufficiency will feel great regret. Fitness to enter His holy presence requires clean hands and a pure heart, and through faith in Christ's blood these qualities are received, the soul being made clean and white and clothed with His righteousness. With them come the white robe, the crown of righteousness, and life everlasting.

Those who answer the final invitation must be clothed in Christ's righteousness, and beholding Jesus changes them toward His likeness as they turn from wrongdoing and are cleansed from impurity in both conduct and spirit. Preparing to meet God means searching the heart, removing conflict and pride, putting away disagreements, and being clothed in Christ's righteousness, so that the meeting can be like the gate of heaven. Parents are to prepare their children to appear before God with inward purity rather than fine clothes, with the heart clothed in Christ's righteousness. The question of who may ascend and stand calls for thorough conversion, with God's truth shaping life and character, especially in work involving sacred things.

Only those closely connected with God, with clean hands and an undefiled heart and right practices, can do justice to sacred work, bringing God's wisdom into their labor and treating what they handle as holy. Unclean hands, a defiled heart, and keeping the pure principles of shining truth out of life and character leave a person in perilous standing before God, with a heart that cannot be made better until there is thorough conversion and entire renovation of moral taste. Ascending to God's holy place and receiving a reward in the heavenly kingdom depends on cleanness of heart, not color of skin, for God has not made a special heaven for white people and another for black people. A white, clean heart is what has value with God, coming when Christ makes the soul clean and white in the blood of the Lamb and clothes it with the garments of His righteousness, and those so cleansed, black or white, will be honored equally when the face of Jesus shines upon the righteous.

The heart must be cleansed of selfishness and shaped by Christlike love, for purity of heart and conduct matters in serving God. Inward purity leads to pure and holy conduct that refreshes others, which is what it means to have a pure heart and clean hands for entering the Lord's holy presence.

Standing in the Last Days

Only those with clean hands and a pure heart will abide the day of His coming and stand when the Lord appears, which demands freedom from polluting sins even among those who profess better things and are not suspected of danger. Standing in His holy place requires that cleansing through repentance, purification, and obedience to the truth, with living faith shown by works and each person examining whether he is among the saved and prepared for the day of judgment. That purity includes purity of mind and chastity of conduct, rejecting every invitation to sin and every unwarrantable liberty with the person and refusing any improper familiarity or sexual sin, as the fitness for Christ's coming. It recoils with horror from sin and from hypocrisy and villainy when one handling sacred things hides baseness of heart under a ministerial cloak.

Only those with clean hands and a pure heart will stand through the time of trouble. Now is the time to lay up treasure in heaven and to set hearts in order ready for that trying time, with the law of God in the mind and forehead and written in the heart.

At His return the Son of man draws nearer on a great white cloud with fire and rainbow and ten thousand angels, His eyes as a flame of fire searching His children through and through. God's people ask in solemn silence who shall be able to stand, with all faces pale under self-examination whether each robe is spotless and whether they have clean hands and a pure heart to stand in that awful moment in God's holy presence. Jesus Himself answers the fearful cry that His grace is sufficient for them to make them able to stand, which lights their faces and fills every heart with joy as the cloud draws still nearer the earth. The same assurance is given that His grace is sufficient for those with clean hands and a pure heart who are fit to enter His holy presence.

In the judgment professed believers face a searching review of their lives in which deeds and sins are exposed, and they see their guilt and their need to be justified before God. The question of the verse then becomes whether anyone can stand faultless before a pure and holy God. Those who worship God are measured, with lives and sins recorded in heaven, and names may be blotted out of the book of life when people who received light and repeated appeals lack Christ's transforming grace and a living connection with Him. Entering His holy presence requires clean hands and a character made fit for heaven, calling for humility and daily character formation in view of God's holiness and judgment.

Fitness for Sacred Service

Those who take up sacred work and give the last solemn warning message to the world must be sanctified in heart and life in order to ascend into God's presence and stand in His holy place. Entering and standing there requires purity of heart and life, which is clean hands and a pure heart, and those engaged in that sacred work must carry out in their own lives the principles of the truth they handle. Their lives must reflect the truth they handle, their hearts must be pure and in communion with God, and they must exercise great carefulness in conduct. Purity of life and heart is required of those entrusted with responsibilities in God's work, for standing in God's holy presence means clean hands and a pure heart. Bearing such responsibility is an honor, but a person cannot serve rightly without God, and God cannot work with one whose heart and conduct are unclean, whose heart is impure and whose hands are unclean in His sight.

Only those with a pure heart and clean hands may handle God's sacred work in Christ's stead. Those called to responsible positions must stay in touch with God to have fine, keen, clear perception of what constitutes equity in judgment, must practice the commandments in every line of work, and must watch, pray and work with the eye single to the glory of God knowing they work in sight of heaven. Representing God's cause requires a heart as tender, pure, true and compassionate as Christ's and adopting His maxims and principles rather than dishonoring God through conduct. Without this men make God's cause an excuse for oppression and suffering, bear human imperfection, dishonor God and truth, are deceived and betray Christ, and lay stumbling blocks by which precious souls stumble to ruin.

Coming before the Lord and preparing to meet Him requires clean hands and a pure heart. Preparing to meet God means searching the heart, praying earnestly, putting away wrongdoing, conflict, pride and disagreements, and seeking purity and rightness with God, with the heart clothed in Christ's righteousness. Fine clothes matter less than inward purity, and parents should prepare children to appear before God with inward purity rather than fine dress. With this preparation the meeting can be like the gate of heaven.

Those who will ascend to God and stand in His holy place and be without fault before His throne are those with clean hands and a pure heart, free from professional falseness and hollow hypocrisy, who have not lifted the soul to vanity nor sworn deceitfully. They walk uprightly and work righteousness and keep truth in the heart, refuse to conceal conviction of duty for fear of persecution, maintain principle at all hazard and follow Jesus. If they suffer for truth they share Christ's suffering and will share His glory and receive blessing and righteousness from the God of salvation. This is plain instruction of duty for all who desire the blessings promised to the meek who shall inherit the earth, to those who hunger and thirst after righteousness who shall be filled, to the merciful who shall obtain mercy, and to the pure in heart who shall see God. Only those with clean hands and a pure heart, who have not lifted up the soul to vanity nor sworn deceitfully, may ascend and stand there, and they shall receive the blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of salvation, and they are called to stand in their appointed lot in harmony, hold aloft the Bible standard, live the truth, exercise mercy and the love of God, and be ready for service.
