Psalms 25:14

The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.

The secret of the Lord is His hidden counsel and direction, His hidden wisdom and knowledge of divine things, the great things of His kingdom and His truth. It is with those who fear Him, which is to reverence, honor and obey Him, keep His commandments and testimonies, and live in close, living connection with Him. To them He makes known and shows His covenant, even deeper instruction in the mystery of God and of Christ, visions of the King in His beauty, the rest that remains for the people of God, and entrance into the city whose Builder and Maker is God. This is learned by bringing the whole being into connection with God, accepting the Holy Spirit for illumination and following on to know the Lord, through communion with God and study of His word with earnest, faithful, diligent effort, and in humility, meekness, watching unto prayer and humble fervent intercession. So Daniel received knowledge, wisdom and understanding of visions and dreams after united prayer, Abraham was taken into confidence concerning Sodom, Moses in harmony with God's will was shown His merciful character, and Peter knew Christ's glory by divine revelation.

Secret, Covenant, and Fear

The secret spoken of is the Lord's own secret purposes, His hidden counsel and direction, His hidden wisdom, knowledge of divine things, the great things of His kingdom, and His truth. It is opened to those who fear Him, and to them He makes known and shows His covenant. This showing is to be engraved upon the heart, calling to pursue a right course in meekness and lowliness with watching unto prayer, so that trying experience may become the means of saving the soul, and the psalm is to be studied deeply as part of guarding sacred principles of truth.

The covenant thus shown is deeper instruction in the mystery of God the Father and of Jesus Christ, visions of the King in His beauty, the opening of the rest that remains for the people of God, and entrance into the city whose Builder and Maker is God, given with renewed strength and clear thought. Fearing Him, which is the condition for receiving all this, means reverencing Him, honoring and obeying Him, keeping His commandments and testimonies, and living in close, living connection with Him. Those who so honor and fear Him are taken into His confidence and have His purposes revealed to them, as Abraham was told of the coming judgment on Sodom with the explanation that its guilt would be examined before action, leaving time to repent if the limits of divine mercy had not been passed. His secret is given to simple men willing to learn from the great Teacher, so that they know the mysteries of the kingdom and then proclaim openly what they heard privately.

Fearing Him further means trusting in the Lord, doing good, delighting in Him, committing the way to Him, resting in Him and waiting patiently without fretting over the wicked, leaning not to self-understanding, acknowledging Him in all ways, hearkening to His commandments, and being meek and keeping His covenant and testimonies. To such He brings the desires of the heart, feeds and establishes them, and brings forth righteousness as light and judgment as noonday. He guides the meek in judgment, teaches them His way, directs their paths, teaches them to profit, leads them in the right way, and fills their paths with mercy and truth and their lives with peace as a river, so they need no secret societies of worldlings, which are distrust of God.

Receiving Divine Counsel

The secret is with those who fear Him as they bring their whole being into connection with God, accept the Holy Spirit for spiritual illumination, and follow on under its guidance to know the Lord. They go where He directs, do what He commands, wait on Him, and surrender continually what He requires. This knowledge is learned through communion with God and study of His word. Those who seek to know the truth and God's will, remain faithful to the light they have received, and diligently perform their daily duties are guided into all truth. Gaining a character God approves calls for earnest and diligent seeking in Scripture, not haphazard effort.

As people search Scripture sincerely to know God's will, the Holy Spirit enlightens them, draws them into sympathy with God's plans, and helps them understand His gracious purpose of salvation and His invitation to share in the heavenly family. Heavenly angels also enlighten their minds, so that they see more clearly His love, His salvation, and His plan to make them partners in His heavenly kingdom. The privilege belongs to those who pursue a right course in meekness and lowliness with watching unto prayer, so that a trying experience may become the means of saving the soul. It is connected with humility, meekness, earnest prayer, and intercession.

God shares His secret by giving humility, meekness, and fervent love among themselves, confidence to ask knowing they shall receive, and power to pray and intercede with effect, while those He would use must avoid lifting themselves up and must walk with God to do earnest work. Walking with God and humble, fervent prayer and intercession belong with the making known of His secret and covenant. In difficulty, seeking the Saviour and asking God for wisdom rests on the assurance that God will guide those who turn to Him. God Himself leads those who look to Him, and His wisdom alone is unerring while human wisdom is foolishness. He guides the meek in judgment and teaches them His way so they succeed in the path they should go.

Reverent faithfulness makes people receptive to God's truth, and under the sanctifying power of His Word and the Holy Spirit's guidance that truth shapes mind and character and is shown in sound, elevating practices and Christlike love. The Lord makes His counsel and covenant known to those who fear Him and keep His commandments. His secret is given to simple men willing to learn from the great Teacher, so that they know the mysteries of the kingdom. What they hear privately they are then to proclaim openly to the world.

Witnesses in Bible History

Daniel's close connection with God shows what it means that the secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, for to those who fear Him and live in close connection with Him He opens His secrets, His hidden wisdom and the secrets of the Most High, and gives knowledge, skill, wisdom and understanding of visions and dreams. Daniel had that fear, connection and reverence, and therefore divine wisdom and understanding were brought to him, including insight into visions and dreams. He valued that knowledge above gold, and he kept his religious life equal with his study of science.

Because he feared God and stayed closely connected to the Source of all wisdom, living in close, living connection with the God of all wisdom, he had understanding in all visions and dreams. He was ten times better in wisdom and understanding than the magicians and astrologers, and when the secret of the king's dream was needed God revealed it to him in a night vision after he and his companions unitedly sought God's mercy. Then Daniel blessed God, and the same account shows that heavenly wisdom is given to those who serve God faithfully, with diligent study and reverence for God joined to heavenly wisdom. His religious training was kept up with his learning, he cooperated with God with every power given him, and God gave him a knowledge more precious than the gold of Ophir that produced continual growth in religious wisdom and intelligence and fitted him for faithful service in Babylon. The same promise belongs to those upon whom the ends of the world are come, so diligent effort to secure knowledge under God's training is richly rewarded with wisdom that serves in straight places, while God will not supply what mental and spiritual indolence neglects.

Those who honor and fear God are taken into His confidence and have His purposes revealed to them, and God so honored Abraham by telling him of the coming judgment on Sodom. He explained that He would examine the city's guilt before acting, and if its people had not passed the limits of divine mercy they would still have time to repent. Those who fear God are likewise granted access to His counsel and shown His covenant, and Moses could stand without fear in God's presence because his soul was in harmony with God's will. To him God revealed His merciful character and promised to renew His favor to Israel.

God shares the knowledge of divine things with those who fear Him, and Peter's recognition of Christ's glory was evidence that God had taught him. That knowledge came by divine revelation, not by human wisdom or goodness.

Prophecy and Final Crisis

The secret is given to those who reverently seek knowledge of God above earthly riches and heed His word, and those who receive it are faithful and obedient to the promptings of His Spirit and the teachings of His Word, gaining insight into His purposes including prophetic truth. The great things of His kingdom are revealed and His covenant made known to those who fear Him.

Those who fear God are shown His covenant as they plead this promise while walking and working with trembling and searching the Scriptures point by point in small praying companies of about a dozen until every point is established in faith. Then chapter after chapter of experience is opened before them, even critical minds are convinced one after another, especially on the sanctuary question by making clear and distinct the pattern given in the mount, truth is substantiated as love for Christ grows after months of urgent searching, and the praying searchers are brought into harmony so they can present it to others with increasing numbers in unity.

The promise makes believers wise to know the specific places appointed to be worked and to use entrusted means to open new fields and warn cities and villages as fast as possible, working with diligence in harmony with Christ and hidden in Him rather than spending time in contention over little differences that hinder spirituality and the work. This is given because a time of trouble unlike any since nations began is near when the enemy will fill all wicked men with his schemes. In the perilous times before us the understanding of the science of truth and His covenant keeps those who fear the Lord from being led into uncertain paths, as they open the heart to Christ knocking and receive Him, while ministers must not present peace and safety doctrines and all who fear God must now learn what the covenant is.

Those who fear God receive heaven-sent light, and what is revealed becomes to them the power and wisdom of God. Those who have had great light and knowledge but make their own systems and ideas the standard, saying anything contrary to their ideas must be false, do not fear Him and do not have His secret. They exalt pretentious human assertions above the clearest light, pronounce heaven-sent light to be darkness, and refuse what would be to them the power and wisdom of God, so human ideas must not be treated as the standard for truth or used to reject heaven-sent light.

God gives His secret knowledge of truth to those who fear Him, who open the door of the heart to heaven-sent light and have an ear to hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To them is given spiritual eyesight to distinguish the light of truth from the darkness of error and to overcome, and to them is given to eat of the tree of life. Those who do not fear Him remain blinded by selfishness, egotism, pride and the idol of their own opinion, will not come that they might have life, and by resisting and rejecting light form the habit of rejecting it until they lose an experience more precious than silver and gold.

The same promise belongs to those upon whom the ends of the world are come, for those who fear God live in close, living connection with the God of all wisdom, and to them He makes known His secrets and gives heavenly wisdom. Daniel is the proof, for because he feared God he had understanding in all visions and dreams, was ten times better in wisdom and understanding than the magicians and astrologers, and when the secret of the king's dream was needed it was revealed to him in a night vision after united prayer with his companions. Diligent effort to secure knowledge under God's training is richly rewarded with wisdom that serves in straight places, while God will not supply what mental and spiritual indolence neglects, and receiving the light of truth requires a heart willing to hear and accept it.

Faithfulness in Work and Life

The secret of the Lord is His secret counsel and direction given to those who fear Him, enabling them to do the work He has given them and to stand with the whole armor on ready for the great review as they acknowledge Him in all their ways. Those who stand ready and faithfully do that work may receive His guidance. It is words to engrave upon the heart, calling to pursue a right course in meekness and lowliness with watching unto prayer, so that a trying experience may become the means of saving the soul. The psalm is to be studied deeply as part of guarding the sacred principles of truth against Satan's efforts to undermine them.

His messengers who fear Him receive this guidance so they can stay on their own ground and keep to their legitimate work instead of going out of the way to learn what opponents say of the truth. They say and do nothing that would keep opponents away from their assemblies, even when opponents are inspired against them in their presence. They remain faithful without being drawn into opponents' arguments.

God shares His secret with those who fear Him by giving humility, meekness and fervent love among themselves, confidence to ask knowing they shall receive, and power to pray and intercede with effect. Those He would use must avoid lifting themselves up and must walk with God to do earnest work. Those who honor and obey Him may also have power with God in prayer as they face efforts to set human laws above God's law.

God's people are to keep the counsel and confidential matters of the church among themselves rather than disclose them to enemies who cannot discern the principles guiding believers. They are to keep counsel within their own company and not disclose plans or shared responsibilities that could be used against them. Those making plans for the work should seek counsel from God and lay their plans before people who love Him and keep His commandments.

The verse belongs to carrying the work forward in reverence rather than contention over small differences, working with diligence in harmony instead of spending time in contention that hinders spirituality and the work. For medical missionaries this means not working at cross-purposes for selfish gain by setting up profitable private practice beside established sanitariums while neglecting unworked fields, but going where He sends to save souls. To those who so fear and obey Him God hears prayer, gives power, fills the heart with love, joy, peace and holiness, develops character, directs paths, and keeps them with the whole armor on ready for the great review.

To such He brings the desires of the heart, feeds and establishes them, and brings forth righteousness as light and judgment as noonday. He guides the meek in judgment, teaches them His way, directs their paths, teaches them to profit, and leads them in the right way. He fills their paths with mercy and truth and their lives with peace as a river, so they need no secret societies of worldlings, which are distrust of God.
