David Lifts His Hands at Sunrise Among Olive Treesby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 25:2

O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.

O my God, I trust in thee is a plea of trust in God not to be put to shame and not to be defeated by the triumphing of enemies. It is the prayer of those who truly believe the Word of God, to be offered to heaven as the spirit in which to seek the Lord. The surrounding prayer joins that trust to lifting the soul to the Lord, to waiting on Him all the day without shame, to shame coming instead upon those who transgress without cause, and to asking Him as the God of salvation to show His ways, teach His paths, and lead in His truth as guide and teacher of seekers.

The trust described is the opposite of lifting the soul to vanity, seeking supremacy, accepting Satan's suggestions, and failing to honor and reverence God and His truth and openly avow allegiance to Him. Such a course forfeits claim to blessing, so that God cannot work in harmony with such persons. The trust means humbling the heart before God amid trials even when events seem unexplainable. It carries assurance that the Lord will not permit the enemy to triumph over those who so trust.

Its plea applies against the rejoicing of the enemies of faith if God's servant stopped her work, an outcome that would sadden God's children. Its plea also applies in hoping that the enemy will not be allowed to triumph over one brought near death by illness.
