When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
Because the Lord is their light and their salvation and the strength of their life, believers ask whom they shall fear and of whom they shall be afraid, and need to fear no one. To come upon them to eat up their flesh means that the wicked, even enemies and adversaries and foes, come against God's people to destroy them and to hinder their progress, though those enemies are strong and crafty. That they stumbled and fell means that when the wicked enemies come to destroy, they are overthrown, because the Lord overcomes them and the Captain of salvation vanquishes them.
The Sun of Righteousness removes every obstacle to the advance of God's people. The verse gives full confidence that after asking God for light and instruction and submitting to follow Him, God will guide and lead the mind. In its setting the confidence continues: though a host encamps against them their heart does not fear, and though war rises against them they remain confident. They seek to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of their life to behold His beauty and to inquire in His temple, assured that in the day of trouble He will keep them secretly in His pavilion, hide them in the covert of His tabernacle, lift them upon a rock and lift their head above their enemies round about them, so they will offer sacrifices of joy and sing praises to the Lord.
The verse is a song that every trusting believer who loves God and keeps His commandments should now sing while waiting in expectation for the day of final triumph when every man shall receive according to his works. The righteous who understand God's government triumph with holy gladness in the everlasting protection and salvation that Christ by His merits has secured for them, recalling with songs of joy all that God has done for His people and looking forward with great joy to that day.
