Psalms 29:1

Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength.

The mighty are summoned to render to the Lord glory and strength and praise, acknowledging the honor due to His name. The same summons is heard in the call to give the Lord glory and strength while giving Him the honor due His name. This call stands in a psalm recounting the rich blessings bestowed upon His people and their poor return for all His benefits. Joined with verse 2, it directs worship to honor God's name in the beauty of holiness.

The praise required is cheerful and thankful, testifying that His service is good and that His strength sustains His people. It is a call to worship and grateful praise, to speak words that honor God and express gratitude rather than to complain or mourn over trials.

Trials can strengthen faith and turn the disciple toward praise. Even trials accepted as lessons can yield joy. Such praise expresses confidence in the Redeemer's keeping power.
