Lightning Splits a Cedar of Lebanonby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 29:8

The voice of the LORD shaketh the wilderness; the LORD shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.

The shaking of the wilderness belongs to a portrayal of the ordinary workings of nature, including thunderstorm and tornado and the billows of the ocean and the birth of young animals, set forth as thunder upon the waters and broken cedars and divided flames of fire and shaken wilderness and calving hinds and uncovered forests and floods. The voice in the verse is heard in thunder and storm. It draws nearer in glory as loud thunder that makes the wilderness at Kadesh tremble, coming with a brightness that causes hail and fire and cloud to vanish.

That shaking of the wilderness of Kadesh exhibits the power and majesty and authority of the voice of the Lord. Thunder is a reminder of heavenly things and a whispering of God's great power, whose full force no one can understand. The voice shakes the wilderness and strips the forests bare, and falling leaves obey it just as spring growth does and proclaim His glory. Even the effects of the curse reveal the wisdom and love and life of God and point to the glory of the cross.

Thunder being God's voice means the hand of God is in storms and in fires and floods and droughts and famines and pestilences and earthquakes and other distressing calamities of nature. Such calamities are connected with the sins of men, for the curse does not come without cause, and similar calamities have occurred in connection with great events in the history of redemption and will precede manifestations of the kingdom of God until Christ's final coming at the end of the world. The same voice speaks in the angel proclaiming the everlasting gospel to every nation with a great voice in Revelation 14:6-12, so the power that shakes the wilderness is the power assured in the threefold message, which is under angelic leadership and finds expression through human lips but remains the Lord's voice.

The graphic language is equal to the imagery of Jesus revealed from heaven with mighty angels in flaming fire, showing that such language describes God's vindicating justice and divine recompense that gives rest to troubled Christians and overthrows persecutors at death. The voice belongs to a Father who cares for His children and can keep them safe, so it need not make them afraid.
