Psalms 3:8

Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

The verse belongs to the song David wrote as a dethroned and crownless king fleeing Jerusalem at Absalom's rebellion, when his own son and many of his subjects turned against him. He sang it when spent with grief and weariness beside the Jordan, then roused to cross the deep swift stream in darkness with men, women and little children while his traitor son's forces pressed hard behind. It closes his song of trust in the hour of darkest trial and confesses trust in God for deliverance.

It declares that salvation and deliverance belong to the Lord and that His blessing rests upon His people. That confidence rests on God hearing prayer from His holy hill and sustaining His servant in sleep, so that ten thousands set against him round about need not be feared. Jonah learned this truth through penitence and recognition of God's saving grace, when the Lord delivered him from the dangers of the deep and brought him onto dry land.

The same truth applies to people today: they cannot redeem themselves or escape the enemy's power by their own efforts, but are saved by accepting Christ as their personal Saviour.
