Psalms 30:9

What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?

In the verse the word rendered pit is shokhath, meaning destruction, so to go down to the pit is to go down to destruction. The pit is a place of darkness and silence where the dead cannot praise God or declare His truth, so death is a state without conscious praise. That darkness and silence reflects the limited light then held about the state between death and resurrection, when hope rested chiefly on a future resurrection rather than on anything to be expected in the grave.

God is a buckler to all who trust in Him, a sure friend who gives safety and protection from the sad effects of sin in this world and its dreadful consequences in hell hereafter.
