Psalms 31:10

For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

In this verse the word for soul means life itself, worn down and exhausted by trouble. That life is spent with grief and the years with sighing, while strength fails because of iniquity and bones and body are consumed. Guilt over sin can press with such weight that it brings grief and groaning and despair, until the sufferer is convinced his iniquity has brought God's forsaking and made life intolerable.

The psalm is a prophetic picture revealing Christ's inner experience in suffering and in life-and-death struggle with the enemy, showing that he suffered and bore human infirmities. It discloses how Christ felt in experiences the disciples often missed, and so gives a fuller view of his ability to help those who are tempted.
