David Kneels Forgiven in a Garden Courtby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 32:7

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

After sin is confessed and forgiven, God himself becomes the hiding place who preserves from trouble and surrounds with deliverance. This shelter is entered by prayer offered while he may be found, so that floods of overwhelming trouble rise but cannot reach the one who seeks him. It stands as a firm promise to the godly who trust and heed him, giving courage to pray from a contrite heart and answering accusations that recall forgiven sins to discourage. Jesus himself calls those living in perilous times to stay the mind upon him every moment as refuge, because he knows the power of the enemy over those who do not trust fully and the darkness into which Satan would cast the soul. Joined to what follows about being instructed and taught in the way, guided by his eye, encircled by mercy, and made glad and joyful, it sets forth the Lord's true higher education learned from his Word in contrast to the world's so-called higher education.

Refuge After Forgiveness

After confession of sin and receiving forgiveness, God himself becomes the forgiven person's hiding place, preserving that person from trouble and compassing him about with songs celebrating deliverance. This safety can be trusted as a place of refuge to rely upon, giving courage to trust God and to pray from a contrite heart. David found this to be true in his own experience after confessing his sin and receiving forgiveness, when God preserved him from trouble and surrounded him with songs of deliverance. That experience belonged to his looking to the uplifted Saviour, and it assures the godly that the same preservation holds for them.

This refuge follows acknowledgment and confession of sin and forgiveness, and prayer by the godly at the time when God may be found. It comes with protection when floods of great waters and overwhelming trouble threaten, with the assurance that they will not reach the one who seeks God. The hiding place is therefore not escape from the presence of trouble but preservation within it for the one who has sought forgiveness and prays while God may be found.

The verse belongs with what follows it: God instructing and teaching the way and guiding with His eye. With that instruction, teaching, and guidance come the promise that mercy compasses those who trust in the Lord. The end of this sequence is gladness and rejoicing and shouting for joy by the righteous and upright in heart.

Trust and Deliverance Today

The verse is one of God's promises and assurance to the godly who trust Him and heed His words. It is the assurance of God to His peculiar people when they take heed to His words, that He Himself will be their hiding place, will preserve them from trouble, and will surround them with songs of deliverance, with instruction and teaching and guidance with His eye. These promises are a firm comfort against accusations that recall past sins and try to discourage those who have sought God's forgiveness. The one who confesses sin and receives forgiveness can therefore rely on God as a refuge who preserves from trouble and surrounds with songs of deliverance. That reliance gives courage to trust God and to pray from a contrite heart.

The verse is the voice of the Lord Jesus Himself calling for full trust in Him in perilous times, with the mind stayed upon God every moment. He speaks to those living in perilous times who keep their minds stayed upon God every moment and trust fully in Him. He Himself is the refuge and hiding place who keeps from trouble and surrounds with deliverance. He calls for this full trust because He knows the power the enemy has over those who do not trust fully in Him, and the depths of darkness into which Satan would cast the soul.

As part of Psalm 32:5-11, the verse sets forth the higher education the Lord regards as true higher education, in contrast to the world's so-called higher education. It is true and safe instruction from the Lord, with nothing fraudulent in it, belonging to the higher education that is learned by studying the Word of God. Study of it gives right understanding of that difference and of the way of the Lord.
