Psalms 33:22

Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

The verse is a prayer asking for the mercy of the Lord to be upon His people in proportion to their hope in Him, mercy given according as they hope and trust in Him. That hope rests on His watchful care over those who fear Him and hope in His mercy, who are kept under His eye and watch. His care brings deliverance from death and sustaining life, delivering the soul from death and keeping His people alive even in famine. Waiting for the Lord and trusting in His holy name make Him their help and shield for protection, and that trust gives reason for the heart to rejoice with joy. The prayer expresses dependence on the Lord rather than on self, looking to Him while seeking His refining and purifying work in the heart and life.
