The Creation of the World by God's WordBible World
33:9Psalms 33:9
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
It means that God brings into being whatever He wills simply by speaking, and what He commands is established so that it stands firm. By that word He made all things for His purpose and pleasure without dependence on pre-existing matter, calling forth the heavens and their host, the earth and its foundations, and everything in them, both material and spiritual. That work was direct and complete in six literal days, each day producing something new and finished at its close, not through long ages of gradual development from chaos. The same word that created the earth still sustains the world and causes growth to continue, so that He remains actively at work upholding and directing all things. That same life-giving power that spoke life at creation and formed humanity from the dust restored the paralytic's decaying body and renewed his sin-dead heart, showing power to forgive sins and give new life to the soul.
Creation by Spoken Command
The verse means that God brings into being whatever He wills simply by speaking, and whatever He commands is firmly established and stands fast. His word itself has power to create and to make things stand firm.
By that word He brought all things into being for His own purpose and pleasure, without dependence on or indebtedness to any pre-existing matter. All things material and spiritual stood before Him at His voice, called forth by what He said. These include the heavens and their host, the stretched-out heavens, the earth and its foundations, and everything in the earth and in them. The earth and every created thing depended on His word alone, made by His voice for His purpose.
Creation was His direct work in six days as testimony that He is Creator. He produced each part of His work by His word, not through long ages of gradual development. The creation days were literal days, each a distinct act producing something new, with the result of His work complete at its close. The earth did not evolve from chaos over long ages. His power to call countless worlds into existence shows He could create the earth from chaos without long ages of evolution, so the creation account need not be altered to fit claims drawn from science.
His creation of man by His word was at once complete, perfect, and finished, with nothing imperfect, incomplete, or needing to be undone. By that instant word He formed man from the pure dust of the ground with holy breath of life and placed him in Eden. There the atmosphere, sunlight, fountains and streams, and all things were holy, spotlessly pure, surpassingly lovely, and in harmony with the character of the Father and the Son by whom the worlds were made. The verse presents God as the first Designer, who brings things into being by His command and is not dependent on human skill or materials. Human artists can work only with intelligence, abilities, ideas, and materials that He has already provided, so the glory for creation and design belongs to God rather than to human beings.
His word has sovereign creative power: having brought the earth into existence by His command, by a word He could empty it and return it to its original state or raise up a new race of beings, and human resistance cannot withstand this power.
Sustaining and Restoring Power
The spoken command that brought the earth into existence still operates to uphold the world, causing seeds to develop and increase, so that each green shoot bears witness to that sustaining energy. That continuing activity belongs to the same utterance that produced creation without reliance on prior material, calling all things material and spiritual to stand present at divine pleasure. It shows that divine agency did not cease with the origin of things but remains actively engaged in sustaining and directing the world.
The same life-giving energy that spoke life at the beginning and formed humanity from dust acted to restore the paralytic whose body was decaying and failing. That voice addressed one whose heart was dead in trespasses and gave renewal within as well as restoration without. The outward cure was evidence of authority to pardon wrongdoing and to impart life to the soul and make the heart new.
