Psalms 34:17

The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

The righteous cry to the Lord in trust, and He hears them and delivers them out of all their troubles, raising up the afflicted, giving hope to the hopeless and strength to the faint-hearted. The righteous whom He hears are those who turn from evil and do good, seek peace and keep from deceit, and they are especially the brokenhearted and humble, the lowly and those who fear Him, whom He is near to save and revive. He keeps His eyes upon them and His ears open to their prayers with tender, attentive care, so that their cry reaches Him even when no human ear can hear. Knowing that He watches, hears and delivers gives quiet assurance and peace with God, which brings health and strength to body and mind, and earnest prayer with thanksgiving brings support and blessing with the assurance that He has heard. Therefore the sad and discouraged are not to sink down, but to live humble and faithful before Him and ask for help with holy boldness as needy souls.

The Righteous and God's Hearing

The righteous whom the Lord hears when they cry and whom He delivers from all their troubles are those who turn from evil and do good, who seek Him and live uprightly and faithfully. They stand set against those who do evil, and righteousness in them is joined to seeking and pursuing peace and to faithful living. They are those who love life and desire good days, who keep the tongue from evil and the lips from deceit, who depart from evil, do good, and seek and pursue peace.

The promise belongs especially to the brokenhearted, for the Lord is near to them and saves those whose spirits are contrite. It belongs to those with subdued, contrite, humble spirits, to the lowly, the hungry, and those who fear Him, whom He regards with tender care. He is with the humble and contrite to revive them, and He shows mercy from generation to generation to those who fear Him. He puts down the mighty and the proud, exalts those of low degree, and fills the hungry with good things, and every verse of the psalm holds an important lesson on this.

The Lord keeps His eyes upon the righteous and His ears open to their prayers with tender regard and attentive care. He actively hears their cry, sees the wrongs done to His oppressed children, and is not indifferent to them. Their prayers reach Him even when no human ear can hear them, and neither noise nor the busyness of life can silence or lose them.

Assurance and Deliverance in Trouble

When the righteous cry in trust, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles, answering their trust with help and deliverance. He is not indifferent to the wrongs done to His oppressed children, but actively hears their cry and raises up the afflicted whom Satan seeks to humiliate and destroy. He raises the fallen, gives hope to the hopeless, and sets their feet on sure paths when needy souls ask for help in faith. The faint-hearted are made strong and the desponding are made to hope, for He will take care of His own cause.

Knowing that God watches over the righteous, hears their prayers, and delivers gives assurance and satisfaction. It gives deep satisfaction, a mind quiet and satisfied in God, and peace with God with the consciousness of doing right. That peace and consciousness of right-doing support health and happiness, serving as the best medicine for sick bodies and minds and the pathway to health and strength under His special blessing. In Him there is a never-failing Friend to whom all the secrets of the soul can be trusted.

In distress and suffering earnest prayer brings support and blessing that enables the work to continue. His answer may include assurance of His care and approval of the work done in times of need. Prayer joined with thanksgiving that makes requests known to Him brings precious assurance that He has heard. On that assurance soul and body can be committed to His keeping as to a faithful Creator.

The sad and discouraged must not sink down discouraged. Those who fill their lot and place, live low and humble at the foot of the cross, and live faithful holy lives before Him will not be ashamed. They will confide in God with holy boldness, asking for help in faith as needy souls.
