King David Praising God Above the CityBible World

Psalms 34:3

O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

O magnify the Lord with me is a call to join with others in lifting up the Lord and honoring his name together, so that praise is never solitary but shared worship. It springs from seeking the Lord who hears and frees from fear and trouble, and from looking to him for light and joy, which leads those who have been enlightened to draw others in and makes the humble glad to boast in him. To magnify him is to bless him continually with heart, soul, voice and mouth, speaking gratitude and honor for his help, goodness, mercy and grace rather than complaint or empty talk. It means giving glory to God rather than to human wisdom, strength, riches or persons, and exalting Christ with all the heart, soul and mind. Those who have received pardon and light show it in a living faith carried everywhere, devoting soul, body and spirit to his service and using their abilities and renewed strength to do good and honor him.

Shared Call and Context

O magnify the Lord with me is a call for others to join in making God great and lifting up his name together, so that praise is shared worship and not solitary. It is the fitting response to goodness and deliverance, expressed in words that honor God with gratitude rather than complaint, passionate speech, or empty talk. It belongs to continual gratitude and shared praise toward the One who hears those who seek him, delivers them from fear and trouble, and gives light and joy to those who look to him. It stands together with glorying in knowing the Lord, whose work is loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness. In that setting the praise of those heard and delivered brings joy to the humble.

This shared invitation rises from seeking the Lord who hears and delivers from all fears, and from looking to him and being lightened with faces not ashamed. Those who have looked to him and been enlightened can therefore invite others to honor and praise him with them. Boasting in the Lord in this way causes the humble to hear and be glad. Such shared praise is evidence of a living religious experience, carried wherever one goes in using abilities to do good and honor God. It is the condition of mind of God's peculiar people when they take heed to his words, trusting his holy name and rejoicing in him, whom he will make a light to the people among whom they are established.

The praise also belongs with blessing the Lord at all times with praise in the mouth, in continual thanksgiving day and night. It gives thanks for goodness and mercy, for grace to bear infirmities night and day, for renewed health and strength to travel, write, and speak, and for a helped and rejoicing heart leading to full devotion of soul, body, and spirit to his service. Every verse of the psalm holds lessons about tender regard for subdued and contrite hearts, dwelling with the humble to revive spirit and heart, showing mercy to those who fear him, putting down the proud and mighty while exalting those of low degree and filling the hungry with good things.

Life That Magnifies God

Magnifying the Lord is done with heart and soul as well as with voice and mouth, joining voices together to proclaim his goodness and glory and to give honor to his name for his help. It is continual blessing and thanksgiving day and night, with praise in the mouth at all times, boasting in the Lord so that the humble hear and are glad, and seeking the Lord who hears and delivers from all fears. Its words honor God with gratitude for his goodness and mercy, for grace to bear infirmities night and day, for renewed health and strength to travel, write, and speak, and for a helped and rejoicing heart, rather than complaint, passionate speech, or empty talk.

Those who have looked to the Lord and been enlightened, and who have received his pardon, can invite others to honor and praise him with them, and this shared praise is evidence of a living religious experience. Whoever has that living experience can carry faith wherever they go, using abilities to do good and honor God, and declaring by life that the Lord is good and worthy of praise. Such thankfulness leads to full devotion of soul, body, and spirit to his service, and walking humbly with God makes ministry fruitful.

Magnifying God means giving glory to him rather than to human wisdom, strength, or riches, and rather than magnifying and exalting people. Resources are therefore to be used to glorify him, not to promote a person through photographs in notices. The call to magnify the Lord is a call to magnify Christ and to serve and exalt him with all the heart, soul, and mind, rather than follow anyone whose life does not show following him.
