Psalms 34:5

They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

Those who look to the Lord are made radiant and enlightened, with their faces freed from shame. To have faces not ashamed means not to be put to shame or disappointed in looking to him. Looking to him in faith and trust brings gladness and joy, with relief and confidence from his hearing, help, and deliverance from all fears. In trials and sorrows the burdened may bring to Christ their needs, wounds, weakness, and emptiness, and in surrender find sympathy, love, healing, strength, and fullness without disappointment. Looking upon Christ kindles holy joy, and when the Spirit transforms the life the countenance shows the light of heaven, which fits people to be a light to those among whom they are established.

Words and Psalm Setting

Those who look to the Lord are lightened, receiving light and being filled with light, made radiant and enlightened. Their faces are freed from shame and are no longer marked by it, being made unashamed. Looking to God also makes the beholder glad and joyful, joining looking to him with the relief and confidence that come from his help, kindling holy joy. Not being ashamed means not being put to shame and not being disappointed in looking to him.

The verse belongs to continual blessing of the Lord and continual praise, with praise in the mouth, boasting in the Lord, seeking him, and trusting in his goodness. It belongs to rejoicing in him as help and shield, and to magnifying and exalting his name together so that the humble hear and are glad. It is part of a testimony that seeking the Lord brings deliverance from fear and prompts praise.

The verse is to be read with every verse of Psalm 34 and Psalm 62. Read so, it shows that those with subdued, contrite hearts are tenderly regarded by the Lord, and that he dwells with the humble and contrite to revive them. It shows that he shows mercy from generation to generation to those who fear him, scatters the proud, puts down the mighty, and exalts those of low degree. It shows that he fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich empty away.

Trust Lived Out Daily

Looking to the Lord in faith and trust brings His hearing, help, confidence, gladness and deliverance from all fears, with faces enlightened, radiant and freed from shame and disappointment. Those who look to Him are made glad and need not be ashamed, for trust joins looking to God with the relief and confidence that come from His help. In trials and sorrows the burdened are welcomed to bring to Christ their needs, wounds, weakness and emptiness, and in surrender to Him they find sympathy, love, healing, strength and fullness without disappointment or being put to shame. They receive light and are brightened, and those who surrender are not disappointed.

Looking upon Christ kindles holy joy, and when the Spirit transforms the life the countenance shows the light of heaven with light on the face and freedom from shame. Those who trust in Him need not be ashamed, for looking to God brings light and joy. Those who have this enlightened and unashamed experience can carry their religion wherever they go, even among unbelievers, with the Lord going with them. They use their abilities to do good and honor God, showing by conduct that they treasure goodness, wisdom and holiness, and declaring the excellencies found in Christ's righteousness.

When God's peculiar people take heed to His words, trust in His holy name and seek Him, He hears them and delivers them from all fears, and looking to Him they are made light with faces free from shame. This belongs to continual blessing of the Lord, praise in the mouth, boasting in the Lord, rejoicing in Him as help and shield, and magnifying and exalting His name together so the humble hear and are glad. This trusting, delivered, joyful and unashamed condition of mind is what fits people for the Lord to make them a light to those among whom they are established.
