Psalms 35:21

Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.

The verse portrays adversaries opening the mouth wide to exult openly over another's distress, crying out in triumph that their own eyes have at last seen the downfall they desired come to pass. The psalm to which it belongs is an expression of divine justice rather than an outburst of personal revenge. That psalm is a prophetic word-picture of Christ's inner experience in His life-and-death struggles with the enemy, revealing how He felt while suffering temptation and thereby deepening the meaning of His power to succor those who are tempted. When God's people grow lukewarm, their enemies observe that spiritual decline and count it as a victory over them and a reproach to their faith.
