Psalms 35:22

This thou hast seen, O LORD: keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me.

The plea is for God, who has seen everything, to act in justice by breaking silence and by refusing to remain distant. It asks for near and active intervention rather than passive withdrawal in the face of wrong. It contains no desire for personal revenge and no vindictive disposition, but commits the cause to righteous judgment.

The words prophetically unveil the inner experience of Christ in His conflict with the enemy, disclosing how He felt amid the trials He endured. Read in that light, they give access to His heart during temptation and suffering. The appeal to God also belongs with the principle that whoever exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted, joining the cry for divine action to the appointed end of pride and humility.
