Psalms 35:26
Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me. Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.
The petition asks that everyone who finds joy in the wounded man's pain be reduced together to shame and bewildered disgrace. It asks further that those who make themselves great at his expense be wrapped round with humiliation and loss of honor. In David's own situation this is a plea for God to act justly against glad onlookers of his affliction and against proud opposers, rather than a burst of private vindictiveness.
In its wider prophetic reach it unveils the adversaries of Christ exulting over His anguish and lifting themselves high against Him. It belongs to the foretold disclosure of His inward conflict and endurance of suffering. Their present triumph turns at last into their own shame and dishonor.
