Psalms 35:4

Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt.

The cry for seekers after life to be confounded and put to shame is a prayer for God's just dealing with those who would destroy the innocent. It is not the expression of a vindictive temper or a personal thirst for revenge. The further plea that devisers of hurt be turned back and brought to confusion asks for the frustration of evil plotting by righteous judgment. That same plea prophetically portrays the inner life of Christ when he stood in mortal conflict with the enemy. Read in that light, it discloses what he felt under suffering and temptation and shows how fully he entered into the trials of those he came to rescue.

The verse belongs with the psalms that meet human life where discouragement and trial press upon the soul. There it serves to comfort the troubled heart in the midst of hardship. In doing so it directs the sufferer to God as both willing and able to save.
