Psalms 36:7
How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
God's lovingkindness is excellent and precious, beyond measure in its worth. It is excellent and therefore a secure ground for confidence. Because of that excellence the children of men put their trust under the shadow of His wings, finding there safety, refuge, and protection under His care. That shelter beneath His wings is refuge and safety for all who flee to Him.
The shadow of wings is Christ's assured, watchful, and protective care for all who will come to Him. He accepts them in their dependence and defends them from danger. As a hen spreads her protecting wings over her vulnerable brood, so He accepts and protects the poor, defenseless, and dependent. He warns of peril and gives warmth and safety, forgetting Himself and ready to give His life in defense. This is His longing to gather Israel under His mediatorial wings.
God has mercies and blessings prepared for those who trust Him. Under that protective care He satisfies them with the river of His pleasures. Life is with Him as its fountain, and true understanding is seen only in His light. This trust is that of a helpless person who depends on God for refuge, support, comfort, pardon, and purity.
