Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
To commit the way to the Lord is to entrust the whole course and concerns of life to Him and trust Him to bring His purposes to pass, including trusting Him to know what to do and to direct plans and choices at all times and in all places. It means relying wholly on God as counselor and guide rather than on human strength, wisdom, judgment, or self-reliance, seeking His will through earnest prayer and humble walking so as not to go astray. It means resting calmly and waiting patiently for Him to act without fretful anxiety, without rushing to escape difficulty, and without taking unlawful or self-chosen steps for relief. When His people do their part, He brings the entrusted matter to pass and fulfills what He has promised, directing steps day by day, opening the way when blocked, and making righteousness shine as the light and judgment as the noonday. This trust belongs to a life of obedience that does good, delights in the Lord, refuses to fret over evildoers, and works in faith while leaving results with God, doing all that can be done and then waiting in undaunted faith even when the way is hedged up.
Meaning of Committing Way
The verse commands entrusting the course and concerns of life to the Lord and trusting Him to bring His purposes and promises to pass when His part is met by obedience, making righteousness shine as light and judgment as noonday. This entrusting is to be full and complete, placing the course of life fully in His hands in reliance on Him to bring about what is needed and what accords with His will. It includes trusting Him to know what to do, to know one's circumstances, and to direct plans and choices at all times and in all places, waited for quietly and patiently in hope.
Committing the way means relying wholly on Him through every perplexity as counselor and guide rather than depending on human strength, wisdom, efficiency, judgment, or self-reliance, for He will not leave or forsake those who so commit. It means entrusting the course to Him to direct it, walking humbly before Him and following the promptings of His Spirit so as not to go astray. This guidance is sought through earnest prayer and personal experience with Him, looking to Him to teach His will and guide decisions rather than letting others decide duty or act as conscience, and rather than letting human plans fix the future. His reliability is shown in giving direction and shining light into the hearts of those who look to Him, seek His wisdom, pray, and place their helpless souls in His care.
Trusting means calmly resting in Him and waiting patiently for Him to act without fretful anxiety, without rushing to escape difficulty, and without taking unlawful, doubtful, or self-chosen steps for relief. When the way is blocked by seemingly overwhelming obstacles, patient faith holds on because He opens the way, clears apparent obstacles, brings matters to pass, and does not leave His tried, faithful people in confusion. Need itself becomes His opportunity to provide, and His help deepens love for Him, increases faith and hope, and replaces gloom, doubt, and murmuring with cheerfulness as cares are cast upon Him.
Committing requires consistency in all works, giving the way to Him only after testing it by His searching laws. It forbids linking with unbelievers, acting from natural feelings, taking counsel of self and following own planning and devising, seeking to make a name from feeling merits are unappreciated, and letting inclination balance toward what is agreeable to the natural heart. It puts whole trust in Him, waits, hides life and character in Him, and lets Him lead and work, so He prepares a place for the person while preparing the person for the place and brings His purpose to pass. It must be done now, just now, without a moment's delay as the first step, making haste slowly because salvation of the soul depends on it. Delay places a person in the enemy's power to be led into strange paths under his supervision and control, to make an objectionable record in the books of heaven, and to be cumbered and weighed down with earthly armor and business enterprises for financial gain that prove financial loss, while committing ends a tempest-tossed life without peace and without pleasure in religious ordinances, presses the person into the channel of light to be one with Christ and a colaborer with Him, and by consecration of soul, body, and spirit lets Him use the person to present messages of mercy and truth that transform life and character and save souls worth more than the whole world.
Committing and trusting means living faith in the power of Jesus Christ in every circumstance by fleeing to Christ, cleaving close to Jesus, and rejoicing in Him as the strong tower into which the righteous run and are safe. It means holding fast to the promises, watching and praying, and patiently resting in Him and waiting for Him, forgiving bruising and wounding enemies, not fretting over the one who prospers by wicked devices, ceasing from anger, forsaking wrath, not fretting to do evil, and refusing a fretful, sour, complaining, repining, and distrustful spirit.
Committing means giving the way fully to Him in trust so He establishes it, taking a low place before Him, being drained of self and imbued with His Spirit, putting Him always before the face, having Jesus at the side, abiding in Christ, and not serving self. This applies especially to ministers and workers who take up the burdens of His work and must live near Him, confidently entrust their way to Him, and trust Him in faith for the help only He can give in order to receive the Holy Spirit and an indwelling Saviour. No education or experience brings success without this, but with it right conduct is secured in all places and under all circumstances without selfishness, impatience, and discourtesy, earnest whole-souled prayer is heard, heaven's light is given, and the life becomes a blessing to others and shines as a light reflecting the treasures of future glory.
God's Promised Response
He will bring the entrusted matter to pass and fulfill what He has promised when His people do their part by obeying His righteous requirements in humble confession, cleansing, and obedience, and this assurance belongs especially to those who have received present truth. His promise is to be relied on to act for all who place way and will in His hands, cast cares upon Him, entrust course to Him, and wait patiently in trust. That trust supports patient hope and confidence in Him rather than dwelling on discouragement, worry, or hasty action.
He will bring the cause to its proper outcome and act to make righteousness shine as the light and judgment as the noonday, so that those who commit their way to Him are more than conquerors and their just cause is brought into the open like daylight. When wrongfully accused, mistreated, or ill-treated, the course is to be entrusted to Him and His promises relied on rather than answering in anger, trusting Him to vindicate what is right and bring it into the light in due time.
He directs steps and unfolds plans and will day by day, leading His children in ways they would choose if they could see the end and the purpose being fulfilled, rather than leaving them to shape their own future by human strength, wisdom, and planning. Committing the way means relying wholly on Him through every perplexity as counselor and guide and depending on His guidance for lives and choices, with trust that He will not leave or forsake His tried, faithful people in confusion. When the way is blocked by seemingly overwhelming obstacles, opposition, and criticism and a person does not know what to do, patient faith holds on in belief and trust and waits without turning back or delaying, and He opens the way, clears obstacles, advances His work without lost time, and can make a home in the wilderness and give success with buildings, orchards, and produce from unpromising land. Committing circumstances, needs, and cases fully to Him in faith brings His care, for He will not leave those who place their case in His hands, but sets feet in a large place to fulfill His purposes and sends the Comforter in answer to the prayer of faith in sorrow, affliction, darkness, perplexity, helplessness, and loneliness.
He is a shelter in weariness who gives rest that the world cannot give or take away. Worry over food, clothing, and the future is not to consume the mind, for there is loving care and willingness to forgive to be trusted for both temporal needs and the redemption of souls. Entrusting the case to Him in faith means relying on Him to know what to do and to care for those who place their case in His hands, including seeking His healing power in illness, as when committed prayer removed pain though slight rheumatic symptoms remained.
Those who commit plans and actions to Him in faith each day and keep learning from Christ and moving forward amid unexpected opportunities and increasing difficulties can trust Him to guide the work to completion and to give the Holy Spirit's light, guidance, and enlightenment through uncertainty and difficulty rather than leaving them in darkness. Those who commit their ways to Him and let the Holy Spirit lead can rely on Him to work with them, giving grace, truth, persuasive power, and love for His work so efforts to gather people to Christ bear fruit. Since each day's plans and conduct require divine power rather than self-reliance for influence to be used rightly, those placed under the Father's care receive angelic guardianship that warns of danger and prompts better choices of words and actions so influence draws others to Christ.
Obedience That Accompanies Trust
The promise belongs to those who do their part by obeying righteous requirements, and entrusting the way to the Lord means placing way and will in God's hands in humble confession, cleansing, and obedience, trusting Him to fulfill what He has promised. These words are to be urged upon those who have received present truth.
Trust is joined with doing good, delighting in the Lord, resting patiently in Him and waiting for Him, and refusing to fret over evildoers who prosper in the way by wicked devices. It forgives enemies who bruise and wound, ceases from anger, forsakes wrath, frets not to do evil, and refuses a fretful, sour, complaining, repining, and distrustful spirit. Committing and trusting in every circumstance is living faith in the power of Jesus Christ rather than in personal efficiency and wisdom, by fleeing to Christ, cleaving close to Jesus, and rejoicing in Him as the strong tower into which the righteous run and are safe, holding fast to the promises, watching and praying. For those who so trust, He shall bring it to pass and bring forth righteousness as the light and judgment as the noonday.
Trust is cultivated through prayer, fasting, and humility, with careful thought and action rather than passivity or haphazard choices, for plans and decisions are to be placed before God with trust that He will direct their outcome. It means talking faith, praying faith, and working in faith, then leaving the results with God. Trust does not rule out human effort but does all that can be done and cooperates with Him in carrying forward His work, and after doing one's best trusts in the Lord and waits for Him to bring His will to pass. Even when the way is hedged up and hard, when difficulties seem too great to solve, when financial aid seems lacking and hindrances come with testing, trying, and proving, the lesson is to pray in more earnest faith, put faith and life and hope and courage into the work, and then wait for the Lord declaring His faithfulness, not in fretful anxiety but in undaunted faith and unshaken trust, and God will fulfill what was committed to Him.
Such trust depends humbly on providence rather than presuming on promises by needlessly entering danger, for prosperity and life depend on God's permission and blessing, and He brings about what is entrusted to Him. It does not let human plans determine the future but lets God's providence direct it. It is not to be consumed by worry over food, clothing, or the future, but to trust Him for both temporal needs and the redemption of souls, confident in His loving care and willingness to forgive.
Guidance for Daily Plans
Plans and actions are to be entrusted to God in faith each day. As those who keep learning from Christ move forward amid unexpected opportunities and increasing difficulties, He guides the work to completion and does not leave them in darkness but gives the light and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit through uncertainty.
What can be done is to be done in faith, and then the result waited for without fretful anxiety in undaunted faith and unshaken trust, for even when success seems unlikely God will bring His word to pass. When weakness comes, the course is to rest rather than give way to discouragement, and to speak with faith and hope. In work for the Southern field this same confidence applies, so that if proposed help is not accepted the next step is to wait and plan again.
Committing decisions means looking to Him for counsel to teach His will and guide choices, sought through earnest prayer and gained as personal experience rather than relying on others to decide duty or to act as conscience. Before a major choice motives are to be examined, its effect on spiritual life and service to God considered, and counsel sought rather than acting from inclination alone, from haste, selfishness, and personal preference. Waiting is to be patient and submissive, studying His will until providence opens the way, with prayer and reliance accompanying trust. So applied, thorough effort rather than superficiality makes a stay profitable while resisting selfishness, hasty decisions, and personal inclinations. Ministers taking up the burdens required by the work need to live near God, confidently entrust their way to Him, and trust Him in faith for the help only He can give. In the choice of marriage, entrusting the decision to Him in humble, sincere prayer would have opened the way to form a union that was a help rather than a hindrance.
Youth entering school life must commit the way by praying for guidance, surrendering will and ideas and ways, and depending on Jesus daily for wisdom and help to do best in everything. Committing means closing the heart against foolishness and sin and opening it to the Holy Spirit and every good and heavenly influence, obeying rules, working with Christ in drawing souls, sowing good seed and not tares, and using time and opportunities well. Trusting Him brings singleness of eye and purpose, education of the mental powers with sound judgment, and development of a symmetrical character copied from Jesus Christ. That character is fitted for the higher school in the heavenly courts and for salvation of the soul, so students know what to do with themselves and are not homesick or disappointed.
The course is to be entrusted to Him and carried out humbly and trustingly in duty, seeking God's glory and the salvation of perishing souls while following the path prepared for the ransomed. Those who depend wholly on His mercy and grace to glorify His name with pen and voice can rely on Him to work with them. When the way is committed to Him as helper, He will not disappoint. Those who commit their ways and let the Holy Spirit lead receive grace, truth, persuasive power, and love for the work, so efforts to gather people to Christ bear fruit.
Courage in Trials and Opposition
When wrongly accused or ill treated, the course is to be entrusted to the Lord and His promises relied upon rather than answering in anger, for He will act in due time and bring matters to their proper outcome. He will make righteousness and judgment clear as light and noonday, bringing what is right and the just cause openly into view.
When the way is blocked by seemingly overwhelming obstacles and a person does not know what to do, committing the way to Him means patient faith, holding on in belief and trust, refusing to turn back or delay, and waiting even under opposition and criticism. The Lord knows the circumstances and does not leave His tried, faithful people in confusion, but opens the way, advances His work without lost time, and is careful not to hinder it. He can make a home in the wilderness and give success from unpromising land with buildings and orchards and produce.
In trials, disappointments, and suffering, including suffering that follows from lack of wisdom and troubles beyond control, the course of life is to be placed fully in God's hands in complete trust. The mind is not to dwell in doubt and unbelief about others, nor to murmur, become resentful or irritated, or dwell on trials. Instead there is to be rest from anxious self-concern, looking to Jesus and taking courage and faith, with a cheerful, patient, meek, and humble spirit. Attention to God's goodness and mercy and to the good in surrounding life keeps troubles from weighing so heavily.
Trusting means allowing Him to lead rather than rushing to escape difficulty or taking unlawful, doubtful, or self-chosen steps for relief, placing course, concerns, and needs before Him, walking humbly with Him, and waiting patiently for Him to act. It keeps the very best of courage with assurance that He works for all who trust Him and will clear apparent obstacles and bring matters and His purposes to pass. Trust remains firm even in severe trial, and His deliverance gives reason to rely on Him.
Committing circumstances and the case fully to the Lord in faith brings His care, for He will not leave those who place their case in His hands. All anxiety is ended by committing everything to Him in surrender that wants no will of its own, while waiting for Him to work in one's behalf. This includes seeking His healing power in illness and relying on Him to know what to do, as when committed prayer removed pain though slight rheumatic symptoms remained.
Committing His work and way to Him in trust causes Him to accomplish what is needed and to set feet in a large place with room for His own purposes to be fulfilled, though present conditions feel cramped and hedged in. After doing one's best and all that can be done, the helpless soul is to be placed in His care, His wisdom sought in prayer rather than human judgment, and His will waited for with light shined into the heart. Trust does not rule out human effort, for God works together with those who cooperate in carrying His work forward even when difficulties seem too great to solve, sending the Comforter in answer to the prayer of faith in all times and places of sorrow, affliction, darkness, perplexity, helplessness, and loneliness.
To commit the way to the Lord is to entrust the whole course and concerns of life to Him and trust Him to bring His purposes to pass, including trusting Him to know what to do and to direct plans and choices at all times and in all places.
