David Weeps for Absalom as Joab Looks Onby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 38:10

My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.

Psalm 38 is one of David's songs reflecting his experiences. It is classified as one of the seven penitential psalms. The verse expresses profound distress in which the heart pants, strength fails, and eyesight or perception of light is gone. It shows that conscience was active under the Old Testament dispensation even though the word for conscience does not occur there.

The psalm also contains Christ's experience, with this verse prophetically glimpsing his deep inner distress in struggles with the enemy that is not fully seen in the Gospel accounts of his public works and triumphs. It offers instruction and help for every condition of life. The loss of light from the eyes is paired with the promise that God will be an everlasting light, bringing comfort in darkness.
