Psalms 38:17

For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.

The verse gives voice to deep distress in sorrow that remains constantly present and in the feeling of being close to stumbling, and alongside that distress God's pity and comfort stand as the answer to sorrow. It stands in one of the seven Penitential Psalms, together with Psalms 6, 25, 32, 35, 51, and 130, of which Psalm 51 is the best recognized of the group. By this verse Psalm 38 shows that conscience was active under the old dispensation. It is among the Psalms that express human experiences of need and that offer help in discouragement, strength in trial, and comfort in grief, with many such Psalms moving from a sense of great need to triumph and confidence in God. It belongs to a prophetic picture of Christ's inward experience, showing the feelings and struggles that accompanied his suffering and temptation.
