Psalms 38:5

My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.

The injuries described are foul and decaying, stinking with corruption, and they have left the speaker in a painful and degrading condition of affliction. The cause to which they are traced is his own foolishness, which means wickedness, his own sin that has brought this suffering upon him. The utterance comes from a deeply burdened heart, sorrowing over wrongdoing and recognizing the painful state that sin has produced.

Such open confession of what foolishness has cost shows that conscience was active in the Old Testament. The words also stand among David's prophetic word-pictures of the inner experience of Christ, giving a glimpse of his suffering and his struggles with temptation that the disciples often missed.
