Psalms 39:6
Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them. Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
Walking in empty show means human power and self-importance are hollow display, and looking mighty and important does not make a person's conduct right. Acting as though one controls God's people, and treating apparent might as a sound basis for God's work, is vanity and injustice. This applies to leaders who have turned from the light yet dictate how God's work should be governed as if they have authority to control it, and God will judge that proud and unjust behavior.
People labor through life to pile up riches without knowing who will possess, inherit, or gather them afterward. At death everything amassed passes out of the owner's control, can no longer serve him, and becomes worthless to him. Broad fields and full granaries illustrate this transfer, passing from the rich man's control to unknown others.
The verse depicts the end of one who lives and plans only for self, treasuring wealth, providing abundantly for future enjoyment, and taking credit for wise management, yet when God requires his soul that night his money provides no reprieve and in a single moment a lifetime's gain is lost. It exposes the uncertainty and futility of storing wealth for self instead of using it for others and for God.
