Psalms 4:5

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

Offering the sacrifices of righteousness and putting trust in the Lord belongs to calling upon God for mercy in distress, in the confidence that the Lord has set apart the godly for Himself and will hear when they call. It stands together with standing in awe and sinning not, communing with the heart and being still, and seeking the light of the Lord's countenance. With it comes gladness greater than when corn and wine increase, and lying down in peace and sleep because the Lord alone makes to dwell in safety.

God does not require sacrifices of wickedness and does not accept the offerings of those who pursue and serve other gods, and binding His work with opponents of truth brings weakness rather than strength. The righteous sacrifice that pleases Him is inward, a broken spirit and a contrite heart expressed in living faith, repentance, and humbling of the soul before Him. Without such converting humility and trust, workers are left to walk in the sparks of their own kindling, guiding themselves by feeble light of their own devising. This whole experience of righteous sacrifice and trust becomes real for the sons and daughters of God who receive and believe in Christ as their Redeemer.
