Jesus With Three Children Under a BlessingBibleWorld

Psalms 4:8

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

The godly person whom the Lord has set apart for Himself and whom He hears when he calls prepares for this rest by communing with his own heart, ceasing from sin, offering the sacrifices of righteousness, and putting his trust in the Lord. This is the confidence expressed in the verse, that a person can lie down in peace and sleep because the Lord alone makes him dwell in safety. That confidence puts a gladness in the heart greater than the gladness of increased corn and wine and of all earthly increase, and it is given by the light of the Lord's countenance.

The verse is to be committed to memory, and it will be the experience of the sons and daughters of God who receive and believe in Christ as their Redeemer. It is a precious assurance given for encouragement and consolation, for those in distress to rely upon, and it is very comforting to read to the sick and dying. A weary person who has courageously labored to bless others can rest at peace with God in this trust that the Lord alone keeps him safe.

God can grant quiet, refreshing sleep and rest even amid suffering in answer to trust in God and earnest prayer, as when an afflicted husband kept awake by pain and nervousness then slept quietly and awoke refreshed, leading to praise to God for the gift of rest. His promise and protection give confidence to rest without fear, with peace and freedom from anxiety even amid persecution, danger, and anxiety. Those serving and working for and standing for a just cause need not let anxiety consume them but can take the command to sleep without fear as applying to them, trusting that Christ lives and reigns and will not fail the work of justice and truth.
