Psalms 40:3
And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
God lifts the one who cries to him out of the pit of sin, sets his feet on solid rock and makes his steps secure, and then puts grateful praise in his mouth as a new song that leads many who see it to reverence him and trust him. That pit is the ruin brought by sin, and Christ alone rescues from it, clothing spiritual nakedness with his own righteousness and setting the life on the right path. He gives this song when a sinner comes to him, surrenders the heart fully, repents and believes, and receives forgiveness, cleansing and a new heart, with trust in Jesus as a personal Saviour turning accusation and despair into joy. The pardoned one then speaks openly of what Christ has done, and that living witness of love, joy and confidence shows to the world that he has been with Jesus and draws others to trust him. The same gift is renewed every day in thanksgiving instead of murmuring, and when believers humble themselves, unite and are filled with the Holy Spirit it makes the church a vitalizing power that carries the light to cities and to the heathen and brings thousands to conversion.
Rescue Before the Song
The new song follows a rescue in which the Lord hears the cry of one in distress and lifts him from a pit and miry clay, sets his feet on a rock and establishes his steps, and then puts praise in his mouth. That pit is the pit brought on by sin, and Christ alone rescues people from it and sets their feet on the right path, with His perfect righteousness covering human imperfection and nakedness. The song comes after victory in the struggle and expresses trust in the Lord, following leaning firmly on Him by living faith until the battle is won. It is the fitting response of one who has trusted Jesus as a personal Saviour and received His help, praising God for what He has done.
The song is given when a person comes to the Father in the name of Jesus asking for forgiveness of sins and cleansing from all unrighteousness. Then God cleanses, washes whiter than snow, restores the joy of His salvation, creates a new heart and a right spirit, and fills the mouth with gratitude and praise. That praise springs from contemplating Christ's self-sacrifice, self-denial and love, and from sensing the malignant character of sin and hating it as vile.
God puts praise in the heart as peace and hope when a person in spiritual nakedness and the dark midnight of despair comes to Jesus just as invited. That coming means seeking the Lord with earnestness of purpose, seeing the atoning death and sufficient propitiation, laying hold on Christ by living faith, having the cloud rolled back and being clothed in the righteousness of Christ, and receiving a view of Jesus and His love. When a person so turns to Jesus in earnest faith and receives the peace and hope found in His atoning death and righteousness, that renewed experience then leads to confession of lack of spirituality and spiritual need and to making Jesus and His love the theme of future labor and work.
How Sinners Receive Song
When a person comes to Christ and finds Him, He receives that person and puts a new song of praise to God in the mouth. When souls are converted and give themselves wholly to the Lord, God puts that new song of praise in the mouth. This includes the repentant sinner, and the converted person proclaims the way of salvation to those around. It is a change to be prayed for, strengthened, and longed for when people respond and stand in decision.
When a person surrenders the heart fully to God, He gives a new heart and puts a new song in the mouth and on the lips. Instead of voicing doubts or groaning, the person can praise God, with praise and melody in the heart. Christ reforms the nature of those who are in Him, making them new men and women and putting praise to God on their lips. That praise comes from the treasures of the heart and is expressed in joyful words rather than stubbornness, strife, and confusion. Their words reveal the Spirit's work within those lifted from sin to bring praise, thankfulness, and honor to God and to Jesus Christ.
God gives the forgiven sinner a new song when sin is cured through repentance, faith, and receiving Christ's righteousness. Looking to Christ's cross and trusting that God forgives sin and takes away unrighteousness turns Satan's accusations into praise and joy. Every conversion fulfills the promise of a new heart through a miracle of the Holy Spirit in transformation of character. The one converted had been controlled by stubborn wayward fancies, tossed to and fro with no peace under the conflicting influence of the spirit of the world and under strong delusion. When he hears God's call to turn and live and turns from falsehood to truth and from sin to righteousness, he is set free and receives the new song in the mouth of the repentant sinner.
That new song means proclaiming the way of salvation to those around and bearing testimony of God's converting power, and it is cause for continual praise to God. God gives the new song when people see the matchless love, excellence, and power of Jesus. This turns hearts from lukewarmness to receive His invitation and to recognize Him as the Pearl of great price. Changed hearts show repentance bearing fruit in confession and restitution, with praise expressed in testimony about Jesus. The Lord gives a new song to those whose lives He has changed, as shown when the two young people who had caused the most trouble testified that the past week had been the best of their lives. Restoration to health can likewise magnify the Lord's name and put a new song of praise in the mouth.
Testimony Seen by Many
The one whom God has delivered and pardoned and rescued answers with a new song of praise and worship put in the mouth. That gratitude and trust in the Lord is seen by others, and what they see leads many to reverent fear of God and to trust in Him. The thankful witness makes God's work visible, so that beholders perceive what He has done.
Those who have found Christ precious are to speak openly of Him and let others know what He has done for them, for finding Jesus brings praise to God as a new song placed in the believer's mouth. That praise is to be offered with heart and soul and voice as a living witness that the person has received the living water. A testimony of love for Jesus and confidence in His love lets the world see that the person has been with Him and learned from Him. Christians who receive the truth should therefore be joyful and praise God rather than dwell on darkness, so their changed and cheerful lives let others see the effect of the truth. When people draw near to God He gives them words of praise and thanksgiving to speak for Him, and that song of praise reflects the angels' song while the light and love of the indwelling Saviour are revealed in daily life.
Pentecost and Expanding Church
After Christ's ascension, when believers humble themselves, confess, unite, and are filled with the Holy Spirit, the new song is put in the mouths of reconverted, born-again believers. At Pentecost the disciples prayed and became united and were filled with power, and that same filling makes the church a living, vitalizing power for God and His kingdom. The song adds new territory to the church, overthrows idolatry mingled with worship, causes barren and desolate places to sound forth praise, and converts thousands in a day. It is the sword of the Spirit newly edged with power piercing to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow.
Every soul controlled by the Holy Spirit sees angelic faces in brethren and sisters. All who believe are of one heart and one mind with every spiritual pulse beating in harmony. One interest prevails and one emulation swallows up all others, to be like Christ and to do the works of Christ. That aim is shown in earnest zeal, kindly helpfulness, kindly looks, brotherly love, and striving to see who can do the most to enlarge Christ's kingdom.
The new song is put into the mouths of people in the cities. The heathen in nearby cities receive it when they are converted. They receive the light of the third angel's message and then go forth to impart it to others still in darkness.
Daily Life of Praise
God puts a new song of praise in the mouth every day. To fail to thank Him is impoliteness to Him, for even a favor from a friend draws gratitude and thanks, and much more should gratitude of soul flow forth like a living stream from those drinking of His blessing. Whoever offers praise glorifies God, so those who want to glorify Him will keep a gratitude offering ready. They will present it to Him and to one another, and when a brother or friend asks how they are they will answer by telling of His blessing upon them, keeping His praise in heart and mind.
The new song calls for thanksgiving and for telling of God's love, goodness, and wonderful works instead of murmuring, complaining, or speaking unbelief. This praise replaces murmuring, complaining, and unbelieving speech, for God's people have much reason to thank Him, to speak of His love and goodness, and to walk in the light. Churches are to exchange mournful songs and murmuring for contrition, confession, thankfulness, and praise to God. This response comes as His love and forgiveness bring joy to the heart.
God gives His people a song of gratitude to Him because He is their crown of rejoicing. He longs for them to learn the strains of heavenly music as He fits them for everlasting life. Their daily experience is penitence mingled with thanksgiving. The verse is a call to begin now and let the Lord bring this new song through a personal experience of His goodness.
