Psalms 40:4

Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

Blessedness rests on the man who makes the Lord his trust. Such trust does not respect the proud, and it does not follow or rely on those who turn aside to lies. The declaration belongs to the song of a person delivered from trouble, where this trust comes after waiting for God and after God hears the cry for help. There it follows rescue and deliverance from danger, the establishing of the way, and praise to Him.

This testimony of delivered trust is given so that others will see it and have reason to fear God. By that witness they are led to put their own trust in Him. What began as personal waiting, hearing, rescue, and praise thus becomes a call for others to fear and to trust.
