Psalms 41:3

The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

This promise belongs to the blessings given to the one who considers the poor, and it stands among the assurances set out in the preceding verses for those who care for and help the poor and afflicted. It is part of God's promises to those who meet His requirements, especially by considering and helping the poor, and its strengthening in sickness is connected with generosity toward those in need. The Lord will sustain and comfort the one who considers the poor even during serious illness, and will sustain and strengthen the sick person lying on a bed of suffering.

The Lord Himself pities and cares for the sick, and He will sustain, strengthen, and comfort the one who has considered the poor when serious sickness brings him low. That low condition leaves him weak and confined to bed, languishing and suffering, and God's care meets the sufferer there in illness. He strengthens him upon the bed of languishing and tends him and brings comfort throughout the whole illness.

God's help in sickness is His reward for compassionate service, and this promised strengthening and care on the sickbed belongs to the blessing assured to one who considers and helps the poor. The promise therefore encourages compassion toward the sick and afflicted.

The same pity that sustains the sick in weakness and tends them in illness is the mercy each person will want in his own weakness. For that reason infirm parents are to be treated with the kindness, love, mercy, and forgiveness one would wish to receive.
