A Levite Singer Walks Toward Zion at Dawnby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 43:3

O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.

The verse is a prayer of one mourning under oppression to God as the strength of his life, asking Him to send out His light and His truth to lead him and bring him to His holy hill and tabernacles, the place of His presence and dwelling where he may meet Him in worship with exceeding joy and praise instead of remaining cast down and disquieted. The light asked for is the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit, and the truth is what God reveals in His word and promises, even the saving truth revealed in Jesus, His pure word, His unchangeable law and commandments. They are gifts looked for from above rather than from one's own strength, given to enlighten the mind, reveal duty, dispel spiritual darkness, and set apart Christ's servants from the world. They guide unfailingly through a dark and dangerous world, so that those who follow them step by step need not fear losing their way but are led out of darkness all the way to God's presence, to eternal rest and joyful praise where conflict and sorrow are past. It is the fitting prayer for every child of God in a world wrapped in spiritual darkness, to be kept praying and thankful for each ray, and those brought into that light are to help answer it by carrying that light and truth to others and gathering a people for God's name.

Setting and Wording

The prayer comes from one mourning under oppression by the enemy, by an ungodly nation and by a deceitful and unjust man. It is addressed to God as the God of his strength, asking Him to send out light and truth to lead him. The leading sought is into God's holy presence and dwelling, to His holy hill and tabernacles. There he will come to God with exceeding joy and praise. There he holds hope in God as the health of his countenance and his God, instead of remaining cast down and disquieted.

The psalm begins in mourning and lamentation and ends with assurance and hope. It expresses the movement of the downcast person from sorrow toward hope.

The verse stands in Book II of the praises, Psalms 42 to 72. Those psalms belong among the one hundred and fifty songs set to music that formed the hymn book for use in the temple service.

The verse asks God to send His light and truth to lead the speaker and to bring him to His holy hill and to His tabernacles. That destination is God's holy dwelling place. The light and truth do the work of guiding and bringing those who follow them to that place.

The holy hill and tabernacles are God's house as the place of His presence. There the speaker may meet God in worship and fellowship with Him. Coming before Him there calls for reverent, sacred composure.

Light and Truth Described

The light for which the psalm prays is the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit, and the truth is what God reveals in His word and promises. The light and truth asked for are saving truth, which is a living person revealed in Jesus and taught by the Holy Spirit. That truth is the pure word of God, His unchangeable law and His commandments. It has power to change character, to free from sin, to bring renunciation of world and self, and to bring the putting away of the old man and the putting on of the new man created in righteousness and holiness of truth. It separates from unrighteousness and lies, and it is to be given to the world in the closing message.

God sends out His truth to enlighten the mind, to reveal duty toward God and man, and to set people apart from the world as Christ's servants. That truth leads them to His holy hill, and His servants have the duty to preach it. His truth is living and is not limited to human creeds or fixed forms. Those who seek it reverently should let it guide them as it continues to unfold in Scripture. God is in the present truth, and He is leading His people by the light of His truth and by the voice of His Spirit.

Light and truth are gifts imparted from above for which the saints look to God, rather than relying on their own strength or virtue. They are the clear light of God's Word and the simple truth that dispel spiritual darkness. They give comfort and hope amid doubt and uncertainty.

Guidance to God's Dwelling

God's light and truth are guides that bring His people into His presence, and those who follow them need not fear losing the way. The light is the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit, and the truth is what God reveals in His word and promises. Followers kept by these guides remain in harmony with God's people through the earthly pilgrimage and reach eternal rest, and a church led by God's Spirit and truth will not depart from God's order and providence in essential matters.

He leads His people through the dark and dangerous world by His light and truth, bringing them out of darkness all the way to the promised land. The answer to the prayer is pictured as the path of the just shining more and more unto the perfect day. Such guidance is needed because people are blind to their own ignorance unless they look to Him.

The leading is trusted without seeing the whole path, for God keeps the feet and leads one step at a time through doubt, pain and sorrow until the darkness passes. He guides when right and wrong are hard to distinguish, including in dim or tempting moments. His light fills the soul and leads in the narrow way, expressing the saint's desire to follow God rather than be shaped by worldly aims or circumstances. That light and truth bring the distressed soul to His temple, and His Word gives assurance of reaching Him in peace where conflict and sorrow are past and joyful praise begins.

God's truth is a banner and a cause worth following, and though its path may pass through suffering and hardship it leads to victory in God. Pressing on in that light and truth means continuing faithfully in God's way with hope of sharing the final reward of the well-doers.

Prophecy and Final Deliverance

God's light and truth keep leading His people through changing circumstances and practical decisions, including systematic benevolence, business organization, and the choosing of a name, and they point onward to the final destination of God's holy hill, understood as Mount Zion where the 144,000 stand with the Lamb. That leading answers prayer by providential direction in forming a business organization to manage capital and share burdens equally and in choosing a simple and fitting name that declares faith, for light and truth remain as leaders of the little flock who have not left or forsaken them but still go before them and will not be withheld when earnestly sought. What is undertaken under that leading will afterward be seen to have been right and in God's order, just as earlier opposed measures were.

The prayer asks God to save His people who are still in Babylon and bring them into His fold before they are harmed by its sins and spiritual dangers. It is a plea that honest souls may see their danger and flee from coming wrath. It is also a plea to guide people out of darkness and onto the path to Jesus, so they may be saved and dwell with Him when probation ends. God sends out light and truth to perfect those living on earth so they may stand without spot or blemish when Christ's mediation for sin ends. That same sending leads people to faith and a saving knowledge of the truth so they may be shielded in the day of the Lord. It speeds the message forward in hope that His guidance will prepare the one praying to be among those made ready when the refreshing time comes.

The appeal calls for God to kindle spiritual life in modern Israel, freeing believers from Satan's numbing influence and rousing them to action. It also seeks an earnest zeal according to knowledge for the committed work of warning the world of impending judgments, made urgent because God has greatly blessed the land yet the people show no gratitude by regard for His authority or obedience to His requirements, worship the creature more than the Creator, pride themselves in the blessings of divine Providence and boast of the work of their hands, and are not preparing for the day when God shall bring every work into judgment. Receiving that light and truth brings rich blessing, seen in an understanding of when the Sabbath begins as harmonizing with the Bible. God answers prayer for light and truth by sending truth into the home, establishing people in love of the truth, raising up family altars, and making God's word the theme of conversation.

Praying and Carrying Light

The prayer to send out light and truth to lead to the holy dwelling is the fitting prayer for every child of God in a world wrapped in spiritual darkness. It is to be kept up continually for that guidance out of darkness, with burdens and perplexities brought to God in prayer and each ray of truth followed with a thankful heart. It carries gratitude for God's truth and for having heard the present truth, and its words serve to ask divine guidance and blessing at a church meeting.

Those brought into God's light help answer the prayer by carrying light to others. The prayer calls for readiness to help carry that truth wherever needed, being prepared to go at short notice or, if not called to go, to support someone who is. That practical help includes attending meetings promptly and supporting publications that share the gospel, and asking for light and truth while refusing to support the work that spreads them is inconsistent. Praying it requires consistency in being at work for God to spread that light and truth to others, including by circulating publications that carry truth to new places.

The appeal sends light and truth into a dark world to gather a people for God's name and glory, laying missionary responsibility on faithful people to help others be saved from a corrupt generation. It applies to the ministry and mission of those preaching the message, that they be led and blessed in their work. It asks that those called to do God's will be blessed with light and truth so they can share timely encouragement with others and guide them to the holy dwelling.

The prayer is answered in part when believers become instruments in God's hands by sharing religious papers with others. God's light and truth are thus brought to many who sit in darkness as churches receive more spiritual life and greater interest through taking active part in circulating literature such as tracts and papers. That work advances through instruction and counsel that equips members for it.

Light and truth are to go out from the worship house in every direction so that many souls may be saved. The same words express desire for guidance through the instruction and reproof found in the Review.
