Psalms 44:14

Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

Psalm 44 belongs to the time of Hezekiah and Isaiah and is tied to Sennacherib's invasion and the destruction of the Assyrian host. It looks upon Israel in a backslidden and persecuted condition. In that setting it stands with the group of psalms that encourage the downcast.
