Psalms 44:8

In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

The psalm is encouragement for the downcast, viewing Israel in a backslidden and persecuted condition. To boast in God all the day long is to place confidence in the Lord rather than in human strength. Such boasting looks both to work already accomplished and to ability in the Lord's name to overcome errors that obstruct the way. Paul takes up the psalm's picture of God's people as sheep for slaughter, yet affirms that through Christ they are more than conquerors.
